Dr. Kalam is a visionary and leader in engineering. He graduated from the Madras Institute of Technology, majoring in aeronautical engineering, and is considered one of India's most distinguished scientists. He is a former president of India, previously contributing to the Indian Space Research Organization, and directing India's first indigenous satellite launch vehicle project. Dr. Kalam has been CEO of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program and chief scientific advisor to the defence minister, as well as secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development. As an advocate for research in the areas of nanotechnology, solar energy and other alternative fuels, Dr. Kalam has helped to propel a collaborative vision for reserch at the University of Waterloo.
