3rd Symposium on Health Technology
Date: March 06, 2008
Time: 1:30-8:30 pm
Location: South Campus Hall
Last two years, the first and second
BioEngineering? symposiums at the University of Waterloo were held. Those events proved very successful as they provided over 100 students with valuable knowledge about Bioengineer and its many applications. Organized by EMBS and
CUBE, The goal of the Symposium 2008 is further this knowledge by providing students with direction on how bioengineers can contribute to the emerging biomedical and biotechnology fields. This will be achieved by offering seminars that demonstrate bioengineers in action and discuss the issues they face. These seminars will be presented by representatives of the bioengineering field and those who benefit from these products.

ThinkTank? Winter 2007
Date: Thursday March 1st, 2007 (Canceled due to weather)
Time: 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
Location: CPH 3388
ThinkTank? is a great opportunity for students to meet professors and to learn more about leading bioengineering research through an informal and interactive environment.
The professors will first introduce their research topic or specialization. Students will then have the chance to ask questions about the research and express opinions on issues surrounding the topic. Through this discussion, you will be able to broaden your knowledge about relevant bioengineering research and gain a stronger relationship with UW professors. It is also a great forum to ask professors questions about the field of bioengineering in general.
2006.10.31 - UW Bio-Engineering Lab Tours/Seminar
Tuesday October 31, 2006
Do you want to know how to simulate neurobiological systems? What's the cause of lower back pain? What happens to an individual's blood flow... in space?
Come to the UW IEEE EMBS (Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society) lab tour & seminar event, and find the answers to these questions --- and more!
When: Tuesday, October 31, 2006 1:30-4:30PM
Where: BMH & LHI
Why: To learn about some interesting research in biomedical science/engineering --- all you have to do is bring yourself!

2006.10.17 - Hallman Visiting Professorship Lecture Series (Faculty of Applied Health Sciences)
SPEAKER: Dr. Alan R. Hargens, University of California, San Diego
DATE/TIME: Tuesday October 17th 3:30PM
LOCATION: Lyle S. Hallman Institute for Health Promotion (LHS) 1621
Note: Free admission. Attendance must be confirmed by October 9, 2006
CONTACT: Catherine Archibald|519.888.4567 x 32010|carchiba@healthy.uwaterloo.ca
Dr. Hargens, who has been a NASA scientist for over 20 years, has been studying various models including snakes to help us understand possible benefits of centrifuge systems for maintaining cardiovascular and skeletal structure and function in space. He is a leader in examining the role of different types of exercise and centrifuge countermeasures to keep astronauts healthy during long stays on the International Space Station and on future trips to the moon and Mars.

2006.06.28 - Graduate Student Seminar Series Event
Design of Narcolepsy Assistive Device
Mr. Shawn Zhang, M.Sc. Candidate, ECE
RCH 308
5:30pm - 6:30pm
Pizza will be served.
Sleeping properly is very important for a person’s well being and health. Studying the quality of the sleep analyzes the sleep cycle and stages through continuous recording of brain waves, eye movement and muscle activities. The proposed solution is to provide a technological treatment for the patient in the form of a portable device. This device, designed specifically for narcolepsy patients, will perform real-time sleep analysis and alertness assessment through processing of electroencephalogram signal. It is called the Narcolepsy Assistive Device.
ALL STUDENTS (Graduate and Undergraduate) are welcome.
2006.06.22 - WIHIR Intramural Imaging Symposium
Location: DC 1302
9:00am to 4:00pm
The Intramural Imaging Symposium will be held next week on June 22,
2006 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM in Davis Centre 1302 at the University of
Waterloo. This symposium represents an effort to build on UW's talent
base and to formulate a strategic effort in Imaging at UW. The
symposium is sponsored by the Dean of Engineering and WIHIR.

About this Web Portal
The goal of this
Web Portal Wiki is to create a one-stop biomedical / health engineering resource for all students at UW. As it is developed, it will contain info on events happening on campus and beyond, research groups on campus, advice and tips on fulfilling the bio-mech option, info on graduate schools offering biomedical engineering programs, and other relevent information.
We value any advice / experience you would like to share from your biomedical engineering career. Please feel free to create new content on this web portal wiki, but do so in a professional manner.
