Secure connection protocols
Engmail users need to configure their mail clients to connect via a secure port, using either the
imaps (port 993) or
pop3s (port 995) protocol, for viewing and receiving mail, and using
smtp (port 465) for sending mail.
For any mail client
If you are doing the initial configuration of your email client we suggest using the IMAP protocol so that email stays synchronized between the various clients (home, web and on campus).
For any mail client, sending mail from off campus through engmail is usually just as easy as checking the box
authenticate when sending, and supplying your password when sending email -- which you can see in the following examples. While on campus, authenticating is not necessary as separate step.
For Thunderbird
Under the menu Tools, choose
Account settings and in resulting dialog box (below) choose
server settings in left hand side and select the
SSL checkbox.
Again under the menu Tools, choose
Account settings and in the resulting dialog box (below) choose
smtp sending in the left hand side but then you need to press the
edit button on the right. Once the second dialog box is shown press the
SSL checkbox.
For Eudora
*Receiving:
Under the menu Tools, choose
Options and in resulting dialog box (below) choose
Checking Mail in left hand side and under the "Secure Sockets when Receiving" pull down choice select the
Required, Alternate port checkbox.
Again under the menu Tools, choose
Options and in resulting dialog box (below) choose
Sending Mail in left hand side and under the "Secure Sockets when Sending" pull down choice select the
Required, Alternate port checkbox.
For Microsoft Office Outlook 2007
Settings for receiving and sending are in the same dialog box, however it is slightly more difficult to find. Under the menu Tools, choose
Account Settings. In the resulting dialog box (below), you must now pick the
Change... icon (which is in the line underneath the tabs and above the name). A new dialog box should come up called "Change Email Account" on it near the bottom right corner is the
More button, which you should choose.
You need to change to the Advanced tab (illustrated below). Choose
SSL for both pull down boxes entitled "Use the following type of encrypted connection:". Set the
Outgoing server (SMTP): to 465 if it has not changed to 465 automatically.
With Outlook you can go back one dialog box and check to see it is working by pressing
Test Account Settings.
For Pine, Mutt
If you're a pine user, you can change the settings from pine's main menu, by selecting
Setup, then
Config. Once in the settings editor, set the values:
- smtp-server=engmail.uwaterloo.ca/ssl
- inbox-path={engmail.uwaterloo.ca/ssl}inbox
For Mutt, set the spoolfile value in your .muttrc (changing
myuserid to
your userid):
- set spoolfile = {myuserid@engmail.uwaterloo.ca/ssl}inbox
For Off-campus Eudora users
If you are an off-campus Eudora user and are unable to send mail even after adjusting your settings, you may need to use your ISP's outgoing SMTP server instead of engmail.
