A busy September solving problems.
- New challenges because of new students, we are running out of available IPs on the NAAs regularly with the proliferation of wireless enabled portable devices. It does not help that the teaching computer labs have more students than available computer seats. We have added another /23 subnet and another NAA (a 64bit OS this time) to try to prevent this problem.
- Load issues on file servers which are likely due to 10G uplink to Eng. router. The bottleneck has moved from the ethernet to the disks. Likely we will be adding more heads to the profile server (we also need more disk space for Vista profiles since we have not yet been able to combine the profiles). The user home space was fixed when we upgraded to Frontmotion Firefox so we could via active directory turn off the phishing database updates (we still need to investigating what will fix the retry errors - newer samba?).
- Another account was broken into over the weekend and was sending spam via myWaterloo. For a few days we were relaying outgoing mail from myWaterloo through mailservices until MSN Hotmail stopped rejecting email. Once the passwords on the account was changed the account was re-enabled and spamming stopped.
