Dr. Burns is an assistant professor in Systems Design Engineering. She
teaches courses in Human Factors, Ergonomics, and Interface Design that
focus on engineering approaches for improving human performance. She is
Director of the Advanced Interface Design Lab, which develops innovative,
visualization-based solutions for decision support. Past projects have
included interfaces for broadband network management, power plant control,
petrochemical refining and aviation displays. Her work has attracted funding
from companies such as Syncrude, Honeywell, Nortel Networks and ABB. Dr.
Burns is also a pioneer in technology mediated learning, offering her interface
design course to students in Ottawa, using the video conferencing technology
available at Waterloo's LT3 Centre (shown in photo).
