The father of motherboards

Alex T.
hmm?

Scott
whos the father?

Alex T.
Speaking of new processors, the new Intel Core 2 Duo processors are so exciting. Better performance, decent overclocking for the low end E6300 and E6400 and lower power consumption. Finally a desktop Intel chip to be excited about!

It's so tempting to get one of these for a new system instead of an AMD Athlon 64 X2.

Building a system that I would be happy with using for the next few years would cost around 1.5 k$. (excuse the units...too much ECE 241 for me...) Our new custom-built systems usually cost around $1500. Heck, the cost of my camera was around $1500.

At this price point, let's see what can be bundled together...

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13 GHz
ASUS P5W DH (this is one crazy motherboard - the mother of all boards...)
2 GB DDR2 RAM
2x 320 GB SATA 300 (I'm debating this...)
DVD burner
Enermax modular 500W power supply
Antec P-160W Aluminum case with window

Now, if only high resolution LCD monitors are cheaper... 1280x1024 is so limiting... =P

I love my Samsung 955DF CRT monitor. 1792x1344 is so... liberating. Especially when I had 2 of these for my dual-monitor setup. Add the 14" Toshiba TV in and it was a great viewing pleasure for video editing... back in the day.

There's no more video productions for me at the moment. I've migrated over to much more photo processing. The 12.4 megapixel RAW files from the Nikon D2X just bring my system to its knees.

In related new, Adobe Lightroom Beta has been released for the Windows platform a little while ago.

Speaking of dual-monitor setups, last week our ECE 222 prof needed to show two overhead transparencies at once, but only had one overhead projector. A student went to another room and brought in another projector for our prof. When he turned it on and had two projectors side by side, the class went wild: "WHOA! Dual monitors!" What a bunch of computer engineer geeks...

Speaking of which, ECE 222 Digital Computers is my first final exam - Monday July 31, 2006. Oh yea, my lectures for this 2B Spring 2006 term are now officially over as of this past Tuesday. Now it's final exam studying time.

Here's my final schedule:

ECE 222 - Digital Computers: Monday July 31, 2006
ECE 231 - Electronic Devices: Tuesday August 1, 2006
ECE 241 - Circuit Analysis and Design: Friday August 4, 2006
ECE 204 - Numerical Methods: Tuesday August 8, 2006
ECE 251 - Programming Languages and Translators: Friday August 11, 2006

And I'll be done for the term!

Well, this has been an entry about lots of random things...

Back to studying...
