I was just googling around for TNM-related sites and landed here. I am part of Power Unit and one of the organizers for Toronto Night Market this year. First of all, thanks for all your comments, we'll definitely keep in mind all your comments and crits re: event.

Alex T: I saw the photos that you have taken from the event and just wanted to comment that they are beautiful! Especially the powerlines photo =) I was wondering if it is possible for me to have the originals? I will like to include some of these for our future reference, either on the website or for future promotional materials, such as program book, posters, postcards. Credit will definitely be provided upon usage.

Please email me back at cindy.tsoi@dove-powerunit.com or just leave a comment here =)

Tim: Thanks for replying :)
The entertainment will inherently be cheap and amateurish due to the fact that
a. only a certain type of people will sign up for auditions. after all, you can bring the horse to the water, but you can't make it drink. same with auditions. we've had people ask about other types of music and performance. so, well, that's a bit out of our control (example, someone asked about good old chinese opera and older, less mainstream pop chinese, and well, no one signed up to do it)
b. i'll have to pull the no money thing on you. some people were asking too much for the right to perform.
c. there was 1 official entrance, but basically, any flat land and piece of grass is "an entrance".
d. at least team ryouko joined us for some on stage fun this year :)
e. any other suggestions? i'll pass on what you have here :)

I met a few friends that I haven't seen for a few years at the TNM, and that in itself made it a worthy event =) Yay for random gatherings.

Raymond
good food, good ppl, good friends thats all that counts

Although maybe the entertainment wasn't super super amazing, but I think the entertainment was good enough since it was for free!

Yes, the place was crowded but i think people go there because there are so many people there. The mood there is very energetic. My friends all wanted to go because it was popular, they just like that feeling or that kind of atmosphere. If people didn't like TNM then so many people wouldn't show up.

So in conclusion i think the organizers did a good job and I liked it. =D

I'd like to first apologize to anyone that feels offended by my comment, and rest assure that I meant no harm to the organization, and I applaud them for running such a large scale event. Don't get me wrong, the food and vendors are excellent, but the entertainment is usually not interesting enough for me to stay.

Dan, having the stage anywhere near the vendors skyrockets my blood pressure. Complaining about the crowd when you know it's going to be crowded is kind of stupid and hypocritical, but strategic planning of the layout needs to be redone to at least make it easier to navigate in the crowd. I lose all interest every time I see a sea of people in the middle of me and a shop all the way down the "street". Yes, that parking lot isn't the biggest one around, but at the same time it's what makes the layout so important.

More entrances/exits are also needed! I'm pretty sure there are logistics reasons behind the one entrance, but more should be considered.

Better and more PRO entertainment! I obviously didn't attend this year's TNM, so I wouldn't know better, but from past experience it usually consists of your stereotypical amateur kung-fu/street dancing/singing gigs. I know this event tries to promote the general public to show off their talent, but the amateur performance isn¡¯t quite appropriate for such a large scale, two day event.

There are many answers such as "money is an issue" or "limited spacing" that can be used to neutralize my complaints, but remember (and this will probably sounds rightfully ignorant), I'm a guest, and that's not my problem! Until the event becomes more attractive, I'm going to stick to my shop-for-food-and-leave routine.

scott, the RNM is every weekend, as opposed to the TNM being just one weekend. being every weekend gives them the financial clout and backing to create a much larger night market with even better performers. it gives them the ability to improve weekly. i congratulate raymond cheung for creating such an event and making it as successful as it is.

here, for the toronto night market, it is a two night deal, once a year, run by nearly a new crew every single year.

you can call it boring, disappointing? maybe, it might be compared to Richmond's. but lame? that's insulting to everyone who worked their asses off.

Richard
Well at least some of the girls weren't that bad-looking. :P

It's an Asian-fest, Scott. What do you expect? Properly parked cars within their lines and a dozen empty spaces to choose from?

Scott
Heh... I am comparing to the Richmond Night Market in Vancouver... their first year in Vancouver was already at a much larger scale with plenty of free parking near by. =D

And oh god, parking was a nightmare there...

Dan T.
lol, more stinky tofu? 2 stands worth not enough? haha

more nights...i'll pass it on, but i'm sure there're a whole ton of logistical (and financial) nightmares to be solved because of that.

Dan T.
I also invite any of you to do better using the resources the organizers had.

Proceeds of the night went to Under the Banyan Tree, a charitable organization for people with developmental disabilities.

So, considering it all, it was quite well done.

Raymond
more stinky tofu and more nights!!!

Dan T.
Tim: the entertainment was fine. Nothing wrong with it, and from what I hear, better than in past years. Plenty of people there who enjoyed themselves - myself included - into the night until we shut down at 1AM.

Scott: if you went to the streetfest, then evidently you left early enough to miss the prime-time stuff. I'm sorry to hear that.

You found it lame, OK. Then, tell me, what were you expecting (or wanting) to see?

To everyone: suggestions are welcome. The organizers received some good suggestions for next year during the two nights.

Scott
hmmm I was at the night market too, it was pretty lame. so we went to the street festival in downtown instead!

Katie
there's NO entertainment when everybody is a body taller than you... i couldnt even see the stage =(

the most i remember is the girl screaming in japanese to some song.. i couldnt see her face but i remember her preformance!

although there's no good food, the atmosphere was very exciting!

let's gooo to Rib fest!!

Tim L.
But you live in Toronto, you know lots about entertainment.

You also forgot the off-tune singing, and yes, quirky dancing is right on the spot. But I guess the venue creates a chance to display some talents. I mainly ever go to just buy some Chinese appetizers, then I go home and enjoy it in the comfort of my kitchen and family.

Oh man, want good ribs? Go to Rib-Fest in August, pounds and pounds of award winning ribs for dirt cheap!

Alex T.
The entertainment wasn't that bad, it just depends if you're interested in their quirky dancing, screaming in another language, extreme martial arts and breakdancing, or just watching Asian people reach out to grab free things being tossed from the stage. I enjoyed it.

But what do I know about entertainment, I'm coming from Waterloo...

Ribs... mmm... that's fine enough! =9
