Bill Gates @ UW
![]() No Cameras, no cell phones, no recording devices, no gifts for Bill Gates. Ok? Ok. Through the doors we went and finally into the theatre we were. Our Engineering/Arts/AHS/Science faculty line was nice and short, so we got about 5th row seats at the bottom portion of the theatre. The Math and Softies line was loooooooooooong. Quite the media event around the theatre. Photographers, videograpers, news people, etc. A nice introduction from the David Johnson the President of UW and out he came dressed in his usual shirt, sweater and dress pants. The talk consisted of advances in technolgy, why the world needs to focus on software development, and demonstrations of some of the neat things that are in the works. There was also this awesome halarious video that Bill Gates showed us that was supposed to be some comedic hiring experience or something like that. I didn't really realize the point of the video after it finished, but it was awesome =D. Bill Gates and some teenager dude were the main characters of the story. It was GREAT. Some of those neat things he demo-ed included: - Microsoft Codename Max. a photo sharing/viewing software...nice.. Thumbnail resizing, some 3D-ness to viewing photos, kinda neat. Get it here: (It is beta and it does require an install of the Windows Vista's WinFX system...) http://www.microsoft.com/max/ - Some next gen cell phone with a keyboard..so thin..Mike Lizaridis, Co-CEO of Research in Motion who was also there, must have been intersted in that... - there was also this super cool futuristic setup which involved digital cameras, sensors, stands, and a table. Cell phones have these mini display screens and it's kind of hard to interact with them, so... all you do is plop your cell phone on the table, and the video camera above will detect it, the system will detect it, and log you in and it a video projector also overhead projects a nice large display on the table. Plop a business card on the table and it'll automatically read the card and display the contacts. he flipped over the card which had some notes scribbled on it and the system read his scribbled notes and attatched it to the contact. Place the business card in the area of the projection display and the contact gets sent to the cell phone. Read you email on the table. Take your phone off the table and it logs you off the system. WHOA...This was cool. All made possible by mad software and typical hardware. - of course there were XBOX 360 demos too. Gotham Racing, connecting to any music player and digital camera via USB, etc. Nice. Then more talking about the importance of software and how it drives everything now. Quite intersting...quite...quite... Question and answer period was after and that was it. Nice... Nice... I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now...to think of some innovating ideas to contribute... hmmmmm... Globe and Mail: When Gates speaks, students clamour to hear ----- * begin photographer's point of view * So many photogs were at the event. When Mr. Gates came out and started talking, the rapid fire of shutters and flashes going off was nuts. clack...clack clack clack clack clack clack... clack clack clack clack clack clack clack clack clack clack clack clack... I counted 2 Canons and the rest were Nikon =O hahaha...anyway. Back to working on my calculus assignment...

Apple Special Event: "One more thing..."
Watch the webcast: http://stream.apple.akadns.net/ It's...interesting as usual. I was sitting in the SLC at lunch pressing refresh, refresh, refresh at macrumors.com on my notebook to get up the last details as the event was taking place =P Oh...did I tell you I got myself a spiffy new notebook? Acer Aspire 1692WLMi ![]() Intel Pentium M 1.73 GHz Sonama. Alviso chipset. 15.4" widescreen. 512 MB DDRII memory, 80 GB HD, DVD dual layer burner, wireless B/G, MMC/SD/Memory Stick (PRO) card reader, Win XP Home, CrystalBrite LCD, yummy. Oh, I can even see the display without the back light on. That comes in super handy when it's on just monitoring messages... It came with some very unexpected extras too... For example, the DVD burner is not just dual layer, it's a SLOT-LOAD drive! That wasn't in the specs! Super. No cd/dvd tray to worry about, just slide the disc into the slot... like Apple's iBooks and PowerBooks...and my desktop computer...hehe... Then there's the ram...it's supposed to be 2x256 MB, so that means I would have had to swap out the original sticks in order to upgrade, but instead, the notebook came with 1x512 MB! SWEET! so to upgrade to dual channel 1 GB, all I have to do is pop in a 512 stick. Sweet. A minor thing, the LAN is gigabit lan. 10/100/1000 MBit. But no one has gigabit LAN nowadays yet anyway. Too bad. Just bragging rights. It also has a microphone, so I'm now Google Talking w/o a headset. I can even talk on campus... =P Hmm..what else...? It's not the light 3-pound 12.1" widescreen notebook that I was hoping for, but this one's light on my wallet at least. And I I do think it's stylish and professional-looking. The power management on this thing is cool. I can manually underclock the CPU, turn off devices and and ports I'm not using and I can get over 6 hours of usage on battery-power. The first thing I did when I brought home the notebook was repartition and wipe the XP Home on the system =P On went my LEGAL copy of Win XP Pro SP2...provided FREE to every Waterloo Student courtesy of the Microsoft MSDN Academic Alliance. Also Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 is going on this notebook as well. Also provided FREE to all UW students...let's see what else do they have free? Virtual PC, OneNote, Project, Visual Studio 6, Symantec Anti-Virus, and smathering of other software. I love Waterloo. Which brings me to my next point, Bill Gates is coming to Waterloo tomorrow and I've got tix to listen to his lecture at Hagey Hall! =D. I'll be one of the lucky 138 engineers that will be there in the theatre. Students who wanted a chance to get tickets had to submit a 100 word speil about why I should be the one to get tickets to see Bill Gates. Only 500 tix were available university-wide. Others not so fortunate will just have to fight their way to the Student Life Centre or the Davis Centre to watch the simulcast on the big screens. *excited* How often do you get to see the world's biggest nerd and the world's richest person speak? I'm such a nerd... On another note, here's an interesting Nokia commercial...It's kinda funny at the end. http://www.5flu.com/user1/22/upload/2005876255.wmv

I think Tim just wants to see her beaten to a pulp with red liquid spraying out the side =O
Tim | |
Well, that is the lyrics I have on the back of my iPod =P.
One of my favourite tune of all time as well, one of, it's impossible to have just one favourite tune. --- And no, if her not being able to box was the point, then she wouldn't have been beaten down in such a beautiful (fake) way!
Alex T. | |
When I saw this on Spymac,
![]() I thought, OMG...that's so Tim...
Alex T. | |
Maybe that's the point? hmm
Tim | |
You can obviously see that she's not a boxer.
At least get some training PRIOR to making a music video with boxing as a metaphor. it was comical while it lasted. =P
