What a lack of Vista users. It's kinda sad how they lump that in with the failure Windows ME was.

It's interesting watching the adoption curve as time progressed since Windows 7 Beta was launched in January... However, when August 1, 2009 rolls around, I'm expecting a reversion to an even Vista/XP for a while.

I'm not sure what I want to do with this yet, or if I want to do anything at all.

Maybe you should transfer to the advertising department in Microsoft. =P

Windows 7 - Printer Driver

I plugged my Brother HL-2040 laser printer into the USB port on my notebook and was expecting a generic printer driver to be installed Windows used to do. Plug and play, right?

Windows 7 - Brother HL-2040 Laser Printer

Well, Windows 7 did a lot more than that. It actually went on Windows Update and grabbed the latest Brother driver for my laser printer and installed it without hassle (Yes, the latest driver was published three years ago). I had my multiple-page options, duplex printing, and all that good stuff right from the start. No longer did I have to manually navigate to Brother's website, filter through the support page and locate the correct driver for my specific printer model.

Plug and play - It just works (even with a three year old printer).

Windows 7 - Audio Experience

On the audio side of things, I also noticed that auto-unmuting issue with the volume controls that Richard mentioned earlier. It is indeed a little annoying as I can't lower the volume before unmuting now.

On the plus side, I now have automatic volume switching when plugging and unplugging my headphones from my notebook. Hurray for hot-plug detection on more than just video ports! When I use the notebook speakers, I have it set to about 30% volume. When I plug in my headphones, I need the volume lowered to 6%, or else I blow out my eardrums with these low-powered earbuds. Now it's all automatic. Cool.

I do notice some random popping of the speakers but I'll have to narrow that down further...

Video HPD and forced projection is another tricky issue to address and it's one that is definitely close to heart. During my first Microsoft internship, I worked in the Windows Experience team that created the whole display devices experience for Windows 7. I also worked with OEMs to address their HPD issues while I was at ATI/AMD for two co-op work terms before joining Microsoft. Perhaps I'll write a blurb about connecting video displays in Windows 7 later.

That's it for now. I must head back to simulating packet queues...

Whatever the issue is with Skype, the video call is running smoother than before for me, so I'm happy in that regard. It does however die upon exiting sometimes...

Richard
Interesting. I'm having no problems running Skype 3.8.0.188.

On a side node, the mnemonic for Help is 'E' and not 'H'. 'H' is for Chats. That's a really big usability failure...
