| WKRPT 400: Done!
Just in time for 8:30 AM lecture...

| @Richard: The magic word was palm | |
| Alex T. | |
| We have access to some small hand image databases, but I'm just exploring other avenues. Searching for hands with Live Search also gives some disgusting results... mostly about diseases and mutilated hands... =/ | |
| Richard | |
| I was going to suggest using Flickr, but after searching 'hand', 'open hand', and 'high five', I have learned Flickr is useless. | |
| Alex T. | |
| Sure... why not. | |
| Katie | |
| Can we have a guessing game of who's hand is who's? =D | |

| A Call to Arms (well, hands)
Hello Everyone, I have an odd request: If you have time and are really bored, or would like to contribute to my Fourth Year Design Project, can you take pictures of your hands (open palm like a high five) and send them to me? The photos don't have to be large at all, and preferably, really, really small (I only need less than 100 pixels x 100 pixels). Any lighting conditions would do. In fact, I'm looking for these pictures to be taken under various lighting conditions. Poor light, sun light, desk light, moon light, whatever. I'm hoping that the hands fit in a square too, so it would be best to not fill the frame with your hand. I can crop it to a square, or if you really are bored, you can crop it to a square for me =D Left hand, right hand, doesn't matter. Here's an example of what I'm looking for (hand fits a square):
Please and thank you? =D

| They are interesting, but I don't like the dark environment when he turns off the lights. It's quite sleep inducing... | |
| Richard | |
| The AI lectures are really interesting, I will admit though... | |
| Alex T. | |
| I can pass you the MSDN-AA key if you want to save a trip to CHIP. | |
| Scott | |
| aw dang, you have to actually go get the DVD.... I like it when they just give you the key to install like Visio 2007. | |
| Scott | |
| I want expression studio 2 :( | |
| Alex T. | |
| Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition is now available for DVD check-out from MSDN-AA/CHIP for UW students. | |
| Alex T. | |
| I'll try. =)
I I swapped Embedded Real-time Software, yet I still sit in on the AI lectures...
| Richard | |
| Wow... you don't make things easy on yourself, Alex. Good luck. Stay sane. :) | |

| Day 4: Initial Impressions
By the end of today, I have been to all my classes once. I had my first three-hour night class ever and it wasn't too bad (for staying awake). The material was okay interesting. Perhaps it's the hour-long nap before the three-hour lecture that kept me awake. This term, all my classes are spread out - morning, afternoon and night. Never do I have two classes back to back. Two ECE, two MSCI. I dropped ECE 457 (AI) for ECE 493t9 (Special Topics: Embedded Real-time Software). ECE 454 (Distributed & Network Computing) is still on my list as are MSCI 331 (Introduction to Optimization, formerly known as Operations Research 1) and MSCI 421 (Strategic Management of Technology). Yes, I only have those four courses on my schedule this term because ECE 492A is our heavy Fourth Year Design Project (FYDP). We need a working prototype in 12 weeks. Eeek. My tutorials are all in the afternoon and at night. Boo. I'd rather have all my lectures and tutorials all blocked together in the morning. I have an 8:30 AM lecture every day, then a two hour break (except Thursday, where it's a two-hour MSCI 331 lecture). My Fridays end at 1:30 PM this term. Hurray? ECE 493t9, Embedded Real-Time Software seems like it will be interesting, and there are no labs. ECE 454, Distributed & Network Computing sounds like a lot of work. We're writing middleware. MSCI 331, Introduction to Optimization looks like math to maximize profit. MSCI 421, Strategic Management of Technology seems like a course about business strategy. Specifically, how to keep business afloat and ahead of the competition in regards to product technology. We also have individual presentations to do. That'll be a first for my university career. It's going to be a long term...

| Oops...
(Psst... hey everyone, let's get Scott's key!)
| Scott | |
| I left the spare key to my dock in Vancouver... gotta be careful with this one now :| | |
| Alex T. | |
| It's a tad too expensive to justify for convenience right now... maybe later? But it'll still be the same price later and that just means it'll be used for less time for the same price... | |
| Dan T. | |
| want a T6x dock? lol they're kinda expensive though... | |
| Alex T. | |
| The original price is expensive! Good there exist things in this world called sales, and free shipping. haha. I would also need a lot of Coldfire manuals and it doesn't have a keyboard, USB hub, or fit in my backpack. | |
| Scott | |
| That's pretty expensive! Coldfire lab manuals are free! | |

| Day 1: The return to Waterloo for 4A
On this wonderful cloudy morning, we filled the van and headed down the 401 to move back in to Waterloo to begin the 4A term. My room is still the same, but it's now much quieter without my desktop computer humming along. I only brought my ThinkPad with me this term (if you may recall, my desktop died at the end of last academic term). The T61p is now propped up on my new Logitech Alto Cordless to bring the screen up to eye-level. Finally, my neck lives again. The four months in Redmond of looking down at the notebook was painful. Everyone with a notebook should get one of these!
Even with my ThinkPad's three USB ports, my Alto, Belkin and Kensington's powered three-port, four-port and four-port USB hubs, I still have more devices than available ports. Yikes. To complete my ultimate notebook table-top setup, I'll need a dock on my Alto so I can just plop the ThinkPad on without plugging or unplugging any cables at all (USB, Power, Ethernet, etc).
