Windows 7 Beta Experience

Now that FYDP is over and my system doesn't need to be in lockdown mode in case anything goes awry before we demoed at Symposium last Wednesday, it's time for some long awaited experimenting. I've wiped my Thinkpad over the weekend and replaced Windows Vista Ultimate with a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate Beta (valid until August 1, 2009).

The installation took a quick 20 minutes and I was already up and running. My wireless network was detected during set up and I was already connected to WiFi without worrying about which version of security or encryption my router was running. All I had to do was type in my passcode and that was it.

From the first view of the desktop, most drivers were already installed. The pre-release NVIDIA driver was downloaded automatically over Windows Update and after the first restart, I was already seeing all the glory of the accelerated graphics.

After the first restart, The Action Center already had a few issues queued up for me read and address:
- Need anti-virus
- A few missing drivers
- Windows Defender Anti-Malware scan
- maybe a few more miscellaneous issues
Going through the list was quick and painless.

The Devices and Printers control panel listed many of the devices in my T61p and yellow bangs (exclamation marks) were indicated over the devices which were missing drivers. The built-in troubleshooter directed me exactly to the manufacturer's driver download pages where I could obtain the latest drivers (beta Windows 7 drivers, in some cases). That was a great experience - I didn't have to hunt for anything yet. The only missing drivers that I had to manually download was for the 4-in-1 card reader driver and the UPEK fingerprint reader.

Windows 7 - Devices and Printers

On the note of the fingerprint reader: It's all nice and integrated into the OS now. The fingerprint enrollment process fits nicely in the control panel scheme and the user log-in screen is all very integrated into the OS - No more separate windows popping up during the finger-swiping process.

Windows 7 - Fingerprint Log-in

I ran into some application compatibility issues while trying to install the current version of Skype, but Windows 7 detected the incompatibility and directed me to download Skype 4 Beta 3. These troubleshooters included in Windows 7 are so helpful!

That's all for now... I have lots to write about, but it's time for an early lunch and lectures ;)

Stay tuned...

This is so exciting. Whee.

All the groups are putting the final touches on their Symposium booths.

UW ECE Design Symposium 2009 - Setup

We've got a huge range of projects in store for everyone to feast their eyes on tomorrow:

Read the project abstracts.

Attend a seminar presentation.

Find the projects you're interested in on the floorplan. (Find us in front of the concrete pole in front of the DC Library/Fishbowl)

T-minus 14 hours...

Scott
Yay, I was in the private beta!

Richard
Nice poster. I noticed it as I was walking by. I was like, "There's only one group I know that did gesture-based presentation stuff..."

Alex T.
Our poster is now up at our booth in DC. Our booth is in front of the DC library/Fishbowl by the concrete pole in the centre.

UW ECE Design Symposium 2009 - setup

T-minus 1 day...

Scott
In that case, I will make an attempt to take over the only spot in the library where it offers a semi-quiet view of FYDP

Alex T.
@Scott, you must join me with your Thinkpad! I'm being surrounded by fruits!

Scott
@Dan, where's that macbook now....

Alex T.
All the tables, poster boards, power and network connections are all in place.

T-minus 2 days...

UW ECE Design Symposium 2009 setup

@Scott If you want to live cam for us... Come on, you have nothing to do while classes are cancelled =D

Richard
I second Scott's suggestion. And then turn it into a nice time lapse film.

Scott
@Alex @Dan, how about that live web cam again? haha

UW ECE Design Symposium 2009

Setup for our ECE Design Symposium has begun!

I went with the lump sum package. I don't have much to move.

Charing
You're very welcome :P

@Alex: Have you chosen your relo package yet?

Richard
You, my dear Charing, have solved at least half of my gripes with Messenger + Windows 7. :D

Alex T.
Oh yes. We should just ask the resident Windows 7 expert ;)

Missing from list:

Ctrl+click a button takes you back to last active window of the app (instead of opening up thumbnail UI)

Useful when you've got a ton windows for an app open, and just wanted to return to last one, instead of scrubbing through thumbnails.

I don't think I've ever seen a happier bunch of comments about Windows:

The Best New Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts

Satisfied users! Whoa!

BTW, for those who don't know, Windows 7 Beta is available for download. Try it out if you're adventurous. It's free!

Two of my favourite topics in one post! WLK and testing!

Primer on Device Support and Testing for Windows 7 - Engineering Windows 7

Oh the memories of co-op at ATI/AMD and Microsoft WEX...

And so it begins...

With my electronic signature submitted for my offer letter for a full-time Software Development Engineer in Test position at Microsoft, processes are now churning away to reach the summer start date.

Next up: visa, immigration, housing, and planning.

Richard
Yeah, whenever it's too good to be true, it's probably America-only.

Alex T.
Everyone should always read the fine print and terms! But who actually does that...

My friend sacrificed 10 of his fb friends only to find out he was not eligible for the free whopper
