Day 77 - Happy Eas...? Huh?
Thursday March 20, 2008

I thanked the Microsoft Shuttle Connect driver for the ride and opened the passenger door to the Prius to step out into the pouring rain. "Happy Eas..." I heard. I didn't catch the rest of it before the shuttle took off, probably to head back to home base as it was the end of the Shuttle hours for the night (i.e. I left work really late).

I hadn't realized what the driver was saying until I talked to my family back in Toronto. Over WLM, my dad said something along the lines of Call whenever, we'll be sleeping late. Tmr's Good Friday.

Oh! Holidays! Days off work! What a foreign concept. Enjoy your long weekends, everyone. I'll be at my desk at work making your Windows experience better.

I miss photos with the Easter Bunny. hop hop. *pulls cotton-ball tail*

Day 76 - Windows Vista SP1
Wednesday March 19, 2008

As of yesterday, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 has been released to the masses!

It will be pushed out through Windows Update over the next month or so, or download it manually.

As with any major upgrade, do back up all important data before proceeding, plug in your notebooks to AC power and let me know how it goes.

Do note that if you have some old device drivers, SP1 may not appear in your Windows Update list until those drivers are updated. More info is available in the KB.

Day 75 - Microsoft Photography Club Workshop: Retouching
Tuesday March 18, 2008

Today's workshop was about typical blemish and wrinkle removal, skin smoothing, re-colouring, selective colouring - nothing too complicated that I didn't know already, but it was nice to learn different ways of doing the same thing.

Takeaways from the hour-long session:

1. Take photos with the end in mind. Cameras don't take pictures, people do.
2. Look first how with 20% of you time you will achieve 80% of an improvement.
3. Always follow the non-destructive way, put every new step on a separate layer.
4. Learn and use shortcuts.
5. Record actions for anything you think you will be doing more than once.
6. Experiment. try something new every time you enhance a photo.
7. Have fun. Life is too short not to.

Day 73 - End of The Seventh Day
Sunday March 16, 2008

That flew by rather quickly. It's so girly, mushy, teary and cheesy, but oh so good.

I can still form a tear drop just thinking about it.

Day 72 - Work Weekend
Saturday March 15, 2008

No exciting outings for me this weekend. It's been a lot of staying at home to do a lot of need work. I don't believe anyone would have any experience with image processing and OpenCV, would they? =P

The academic term is closing in and that means more and more FYDP time!

Did anyone start on their work term report yet?

Day 71 - Snow Tubing at Snoqualmie
Friday March 14, 2008

Another Microsoft organized intern event: Snow Tubing at Snoqualmie! Sounds exciting, right? It sure did sound exciting! About 20 of us MS interns hopped on the bus at 2:30 PM and waited for laggards to arrive before departing at 2:45 PM. Hurray! Excitement! Everyone's all decked out in their snow pants, tuques and gloves - all pumped and ready to fly down mountains of snow (while worried about work to be done back at the office)

I'll let you all first peruse through the photos from my crappy Coolpix before I provide some commentary.

Did anyone see any photos of snow tubing?? Because I sure didn't!!

We were heading down the I-90 E on the bus making our way to Snoqualmie,

The wheels on the bus go round and round
Round and round
Round and round
The wheels on the bus are slowing down...

Uh oh...

Suddenly cars are flying by us while our bus crawls along on the right lane. Next thing we know, we're stopped on the shoulder. We look back and steam is rising out from the back of the bus.

Our bus overheated and died on the way to Snoqualmie! OMG... WTH?!

The driver requested to borrow our bottle water to use as coolant and then we waited... and waited.. and waited... So, what is there to do on the side of a highway in a dead bus waiting for the engine to cool? Well, there really isn't much we could do, but snack on snacks, drink the drinks, talk the talk, with sprinklings of sleeping and card games. You get the idea...

So we sat there until 7-something PM on the side of the highway waiting for another bus to come pick us up to go home. By this time, the snow tubing area was closed and it was getting dark. We headed back to Microsoft and as we arrived, it was already 8:30 PM. We just spent the past six hours sitting on a bus... quality bonding time! Haha.

This is one for the history books as one of the best I-can't-believe-this-is-happening intern events.

Someone brought pie to work.
