| Day 48 - Gathering of photographers
Wednesday February 20, 2008 Last night, there was a session on photography basics and dSLRs. I always find these fascinating to attend, not because I don't know the basics or how to use my dSLR, but I attend to learn about the method of delivery. Everyone has their own take on how to introduce new photographers to shutter speed, aperture and ISO. The analogies are what I look forward to listening to in order to improve my instruction of photography to others. The lesson was led by Steve Fu, a Microsoft employee who has his photo immortalized as a Windows Vista wallpaper.
The analogy of the day for proper exposure was related to filling a glass with water from a tap. The tap control knob is the aperture, the time used to fill the glass is the shutter speed, and the size of the glass is the ISO. "Correct exposure" was defined as having the glass exactly filled, not more, not less. I'm looking forward to the next workshop already.

| Day 47 - Microsoft DreamSpark
Tuesday February 19, 2008 Today, Microsoft introduced Microsoft DreamSpark over at Channel 8. What this is comes down to five words: MORE FREE SOFTWARE FOR STUDENTS. Students are now able to download Microsoft developer and design tools for free. This list of free software includes: Expression Studio (which includes all of Expression Web, Expression Blend, Expression Design and Expression Media) SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition XNA Game Studio 2.0 In addition, there's some more introductions to some other previously free software such as the Express Editions and Virtual PC 2007 As of the launch, Canadian students will need to be verified by their ISIC card number...? other forms of validation are apparently in the works, according to the website. Windows Server 2003... great! Now I can have run my own DTM

| Day 46 - Family Day and The Seventh Day
Monday February 18, 2008 So... did you Ontarians enjoy your Family Day holiday for me too? Did anyone do anything... family-ish for Family Day? Because I sure didn't get a break... No break for President's Day either. The only thing I enjoyed for this President's Day was a sale in which I ordered a Sandisk Ultra II 4.0 GB SDHC card and reader. Shipping is also wonderfully free and extremely quick. And so begins The Seventh Day which I have been looking forward to so much.

Sunday February 17, 2008 We have no holidays during the entire internship from January until the end of April. It's just work work work every single day. Some weeks, it is literally, every, single, day...

| Day 44 - Thinking about the future
Saturday February 16, 2008 An intern friend who's planning on proposing to his girlfriend when he gets returns to his homeland is fairly positive that he is able to obtain a full-time offer with MS here in Redmond after he grads. The question is: Will his S.O. be willing to leave everything and everyone behind to move to the small town of Redmond with him to start a new life? That's a very tough decision to make and has also got me thinking about my future. What do I want to be doing for a full-time job after I graduate next year? Where will I be headed? It will no longer be a four-month stint, as co-op has been for the past 4 years, but a more long-term role in not just my career, but in life.

| Another batch update on the weekly happenings...
Day 43 - Boeing Everett Factory Tour & The Future of Flight Museum Friday February 15, 2008 This afternoon, the MS Intern Program bussed us up to Everett to go on the Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour where the Boeing 747, 767, 777, and the 787 Dreamliner are assembled. The building is HUGE. How huge? Let's just say that it's the Guinness World Record holder for the largest building by volume. That's no surprise since many gigantic airplanes are assembled inside at once. Our excellent and entertaining tour guide, a veteran of the Air Force, gave some examples for comparison as to how large the building actually is: it can fit 911 basketball courts, or the entire Disney Land with 12 acres left for parking, or... it's just massive. Apparently, the building is so big, that it once crated its own weather system inside.. clouds started to form inside the building. The hanger doors are each as big as a football field, and there are many of them.
It was an amazing sight to see the massive building and the massive planes being built. Everyone walks in and can't help but smile and be amazed at the crazy engineering and scale of the operation. We got to see the very first 787 Dreamliner (painted in the Boeing colours) as it was being worked on, and still waiting for its maiden flight... Unfortunately, no electronic equipment or cameras were allowed on the tour though. "Anything could have possibly been a bomb detonator", so you guys will just have to resort to the wonders of the Internet for photos. Since the intern event took up the whole afternoon, I went back to my office to catch up on much needed work, and unfortunately had to miss out on a birthday dinner. I got home from work at about 9:30 PM and started to ponder about my dinner. Since I would be eating alone tonight, I was free to do some experimenting in the kitchen. Breaded chicken with fruity cranberry sauce: oh so good. Making my own soup: oh so satisfying.

| Everyones already notified?! Aww... those guys never pick me! not this year or the last time Bill came over! I even told engsoc that I'm going to be staying in waterloo over reading week!!! Still nothing!! awwwww
I don't know if it's going to be broadcast in SLC or DC... most likely. But not worth leaving work for. I'll catch the net feed if there ever is one.
| Alex T. | |
| All selected engineers should have already been notified as of this past Sunday... is it being broadcast to DC or SLC again? | |

| Alex + Calvin, Whistler next weekend? | |
| Alex T. | |
| Richard, maybe you should carry a cup around too! =D | |
| Alex T. | |
| Haha. Cool, Dan! | |
| Dan H. | |
| Alex, I saw someone using one of your "pufferers" at the autoshow! lol he had a semi-transparent plastic cup over this SLR flash!!
DIY ftw! | |
| Richard | |
| Haha, I'm one of those flash snobs. Then again, I don't have a dedicated flash, so my arguments are down to I would rather have a slightly blurry photo with a lower shutter speed (slow synchro on digicams) than to have a black background, or better yet, a slightly (within reason) blurry picture by not using flash than to have a harsh picture with flash.
Again, dedicated flash aside :P I really have to pick me up one of those Canon 580EX flashes... or at least a cheapo 430EX.
| Dan T. | |
| oh btw, all you owners of iPods and MacBook Airs...

I want to try this incomprehensible combination for myself. D3, ISO 25000 and massively wide f/1.2 lens? photography goodness =D
