| The form for UW engineers to request tickets for Bill Gates' talk at UW is back online!
And I just realized that it's on Thursday of Reading Week... Maybe that means it'll be filled with RIM co-op students instead of students! haha.

| Day 35 - Chinese New Year
Thursday February 7, 2008 Chinese New Year: food, fun and celebration, right? So that's what our little group did for the occasion. Hot pot at Sichuanese Cuisine Restaurant 老四川. There was a very limited selection of food, but it was very enjoyable company. Good times. We tried to get everyone to dress up in red for the occasion, but only half of us managed to do so. That would have been... 'epic'. Unfortunately, the small restaurant closed at 10:00 PM, so we were left with no choice, but to leave. Let the New Year's celebration continue... ...with a trip to Fred Meyer! The girls went in search of desserts while the guys stood around amazed at the power of ice cream over girls. "Wow! Look at all the Haagen-Dazs!!" Jenny exclaimed. Aaron and I were just standing there thinking Wow... she's so genuinely excited... Kid in a candy store, I tell you... (Well, ice cream aisle, close enough). We ended up with a box of Cookies and Cream for everyone to share at our place while the girls got Häagen-Dazs for themselves (for later). I'm still in awe. Wow... From then on, the night was filled with socializing and Geometry Wars on XBOX 360, all around a box of ice cream (plus extras). Happy New Year, Everyone =)

| Day 32 - Intern Event #3: Seattle Sonics versus Chicago Bulls at Key Arena
Monday February 4, 2008 After our failed attempt to go see the Seattle Sonics vs. L.A. Lakers back in January due to the insane traffic on the snowy, slushy night, The MS Inter Program gave us another chance to watch an NBA game. This is the third company-organized event for us Microsoft Interns. Armed with last time's experience of horrible traffic during rush hour, Adrian, Jenny, Angela and I departed for our trip to Key Arena in Downtown Seattle at 5:30 PM. The game was schedule to start at 7 PM. Amazingly, we arrived much earlier than anticipated, much thanks goes to the carpool lanes. Thank you Angela and Jenny for filling up the car so we could take those awesome HOV lanes and whiz by all the low-occupancy vehicles. The first 10,000 fans received a resin Nick Collison bobblehead upon entrance. (I don't even know if there were 10,000 fans there in total...)
One lucky fan received a gold (coloured) Nick Collison bobblehead and was also awarded with court-side seats, a Collison jersey and a chance to meet the dude after the game. We had fairly decent seats down in the 100's level and we also had food vouchers for a hot dog, a giant bucket of popcorn, and a drink. That giant bucket of salty popcorn should never be allowed to be eaten by only one person. Shoot. I know corn is cheap, but shoot. That's a lot of popcorn. I gave up halfway through the container.
When the mascot took the floor, I just laughed. I thought it was Star Wars night when I saw Chewbacca, I mean, Squatch run around. There were lots of prizes given out at the game for the fan who did the best impression of x. There were gym memberships for the best muscle flex (won by some lady casually sipping a drink and holding up her arm), XBOX 360 and Guitar Hero for the best air guitar performance (which someone with a crutch won as he used his crutch as a guitar prop), fan prize packs for the best dance (won by some little kid jumping up and down court-side), and other random little things. The cute mini blimp also flew around dropping gift certificates into the stands. Since I don't follow basketball at all, I don't have any comments about the game itself, except that I thought it was a fairly high-scoring game. I was more interested in the photography - not that I was doing much of it, but rather, other photographers, and other... photo-takers. I was eyeing the sports-strobes that were mounted in the catwalks in the corners of the arena and the photogs walking around with Pocket Wizards. Those strobes are sure bright and fast. This reminds me of the Microsoft ProPhoto article about The Ultimate Setup - Sports Illustrated and the Final Four. Final score: Seattle Sonics 108, Chicago Bulls 118. Photos: I also lost one of my gloves to my second pair of gloves. Shoot...

For all those unannounced Mathies lurking in the background who may be remotely interested in the Bill Gates talk, get your chance at a ticket by filling out this form from Mathsoc. And Happy Chinese New Year to all! =)

| Alex, do you have the link for the Bill Gates Show tickets? The link you posted doesn't work anymore :(
(yes, the internet really does come to a grinding halt when there are broken links!)
| Alex T. | |
| Oops. I forgot to flip the switch.
*flip* And sources say that the Math faculty has been allocated twice as many seats compared to Engineering for the Bill Gates @ UW session, but I haven't heard anything about their process of ticket distribution or if that's even started yet.

| Day 31 - In the Kitchen
Sunday February 3, 2008 I just spent my whole afternoon from lunch to dinner in the kitchen preparing our slab of pork for dinners, baking my chicken breasts and cutting veggies for my salad lunches, portioning and prepping bones for soup, and planning meals for the week. It's time consuming, yet so satisfying. Hopefully I'm now less clueless in the kitchen.

| Day 30 - A Chinese-y Day
Saturday February 2, 2008 Today was a full day. To start, we had the usual weekly grocery run in the morning. Grocery shopping at 9 AM is wonderful. There is tons of close parking, full shelves of fresh produce and and less traffic. We then proceeded to Bellevue Square for some shopping and free food. Auntie Anne's Pretzels was having their 20th anniversary celebration and was giving out free pretzels (the giant bread-like doughy kind, not the small salty hard sticks...) from 10 AM to 4 PM. We arrive just past 10 AM and received our Cinnamon Sugar Pretzels without any wait. If this was in Toronto, I suspect there would have been a giant line up with people going for seconds, thirds and fourths. (You know who you are!) There's none of this in Bellevue. Good for us.
We made a round through the mall and came to the Sanrio store. I had to take a picture:
After a filling, fattening run of free food, we went home to wait for the rest of the group to head out to Seattle (yet again). With Aaron, Jack, Jeff, Kevin and Paulo in one car, Adrian, Angela, Jenny and I in our car, we set off for Chinatown in search of the dim sum place (hurray for carpooling). We made our way to Four Seas Restaurant 四海酒家 for a really crappy lunch. The main reason why we headed to Seattle was to watch the Nanking documentary film at the Landmark Varsity theatre in the University District (University of Washington, another UW).
As expected, the documentary about the Japanese occupation of Nanking in 1937/1938 was brutal, graphic, and stunning. The few of us that actually went to see the documentary left the theatre in solemn silence. The other half of the group went to watch Juno around the corner. Let's just say they were the more talkative and happy bunch for the next little while. After a quick tour of the U District, we headed back to Chinatown to Homestyle Hong Kong Cafe for dinner. I'l let the restaurant review do the talking. Most of us ordered their famous stone pot rice 煲仔飯, scooping out the very last bits of hardened, rice crust. Twas good.
After the filling meal, the guys headed to our place for some relaxing poker and XBOX 360 to finish off the night. Sweet. The rest of the photos:

| Day 29 - XBOX 360: The way it was meant to be played
Friday February 1, 2008 Three XBOX 360's. Three teams of four. Three conference rooms. Three HD Projectors. Three copies of Halo 3. Ethernet to tie it all together. ![]()
