Yea, there's really no need for us in Vancouver to get snow tires. For that ONE AND A HALF day a year that we actually have snow? Hahaha.

My argument to Scott: We don't have any terrain in Richmond and people still drive like idiots in the snow. But then again, they drive like idiots in Richmond normally. =p

Scott
Haha, if my mechanic tried to sell me a set of snow tires in Vancouver, I'd probably laugh him out of his own shop. I don't even have snow tires when I go up to Whistler.

All season includes winter..... right? haha jk.

I always ask for extra feedback. It's free!

Dan T.
Scott, ironically i just watched CBC's Marketplace episode on snow tires tonight that mentioned that very fact about Vancouver lol.

Scott
I just came up with the thought of rallying everyone to seek for "extra feedback" for assignments for that particular course that no one likes to take during co-op term. It would bottleneck the entire marking process. All it takes is a quick copy and paste. =D

Scott
In defense of Vancouver,
we have terrain and no snow tires.

lol, and to think that my colleague from North Bay, Ontario laughs at us Torontonians. At least we try compared to all those on the West Coast hahaha.

I know what you mean about the "sissy winter", Alex! We had snow today up here that actually stayed for once. I woke up saying to myself, "wow, what nice snowfall." But every other person in Vancouver was thinking, "AHHHHHHHH SNOWWWWWWW". Seriously, a little bit of snow in Vancouver and the whole city shuts down. UBC and SFU are closed, and so are some school districts. It's ridiculous. And people in Vancouver don't know how to drive in snow! WHAT'S WRONG WITH THEM?!?!?!

Ok, I'm done. It's amazing how much one winter in Ontario changed me eh? =p

I think the most important question needed to be asked here is: What design did you go with for your cheque?

But seriously, why the heck do you need cheques anyways? All I ever used in the State was my bank card and a Visa-cheque card.

Scott
I suppose they were too afraid of the geeks hacking the temperatures to have bluetooth/802.11n in these thermostats? lol

Richard
What? No ATI 3870 x2 for your system? For shame!

Dan T.
wow...5.9 across the board. who hired these skating judges?? is one of them from France??? lol. awesome system.

lovely park, we need something like that in Toronto. but no, of course that would be too much to ask...

and most people are surprised by how incredibly sophisticated and, yes, cool the new modern day building automatic HVAC systems are. i love those things (when they work).

Raymond
There's wifi at the park?!?!? people are supposed to go to the park to escape technology lol

Day 22 - History lesson
Friday January 25, 2008

As I previously mentioned, my neighbour in the office is a Waterloo graduate of EE from the class of 1979 (?). In his time at Waterloo, there were three computer courses in the computer science department.

At the end of my work day, we started chatting about old computers and his previous experiences. Topics that came up included musings about Motorola 68000 (which he can describe to the finest detail, such as the silicon layout), bit patterns, vtables, table-driven programming, reference cards, The Red Room, IBM 360, and tons more.

I work with some amazing people at Microsoft.

Day 21 - Climatize
Thursday January 24, 2008

Speaking of temperature, today at lunch, I had a chat with some people on our floor about the weather here in Redmond and how it compares back to our respective hometowns. With me experiencing this sissy winter here in Redmond (as compared to Toronto's windchill and snow shovelling), what affect will this have on my experience next winter when I'll be back in Toronto/Waterloo? Maybe I'll just have to come back the the west coast...

Day 20 - Heating issues
Wednesday January 23, 2008

For the whole week at work, we have had heating and cooling crews take measurements and make adjustments to the thermostat in our office which controls the system for all the offices along our hallway. The thermostat is in our tiny room with two people, seven computers, three LCD monitors and two CRT monitors. Two of the LCD's are a foot from the thermostat emanating 85+ degrees Fahrenheit. No wonder the people are complaining that it's cool in their offices.

We didn't realize how complicated the system was until we had a chat with the technician. He took out a cable from his bag and connected his PDA to the thermostat (*puts on my geekiness cap to show my excitement*) and showed us all the variables that could be adjusted as well as all the real-time measurements that the thermostat was taking. It was ultra cool. Pun intended.

Day 19 - New workstation - Encore
Tuesday January 22, 2008

Okay. Let's try this again... The OEM Core 2 Quad system that I got last week wasn't supposed to be mine. It belonged to another team. Awww, dang it! I thought. I waved goodbye to the Core 2 Quad, 4 GB RAM and RAID 1 Array as it was carted away down the hall and then turned my attention to my newly deliver box. Inside the box, I found a custom-built AMD Phenom 9600 Quad Core system, AMD 790X + SB600 chipset and 4 GB RAM all inside a black aluminum Lian-Li case. The graphics card was also massively upgraded over my previous Radeon HD 2400 Pro. Sweeeeet...

A quick install of 64-bit Vista and a few updates later, I was humming along to the tune of 5.9 perfection:

Windows Experience Index - 5.9

System Properties

Task Manager - Performance

Day 18 - Beginning work
Monday January 21, 2008

The temperature dropped a tad and frost started to appear in the morning.

Sharp Frost

From the weather forecast, it appears that we'll get a few days of clear skies with zero percent chance of precipitation. Sweet!

After a week of getting climatized to the work environment, I've finally started planning and designing my first work item. This is going to be tough. I haven't written code since 3A ECE 354 RTOS and C++ since 2A ECE 250 Data Structures and Algorithms.

Day 17 - Marymoor park
Sunday January 20, 2008

Since it was a semi-nice day today, I decided to explore the area again. This time, I ventured further out on my bicycle and made my way slightly north to Marymoor Park. The trip there was thrilling as it was mostly downhill. Very Downhill. You know what that meant for the ride back...

The park was huge. There were multiple soccer fields, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, grassy areas, a velodrome, rock for climbing, etc, etc... The clouds started to roll in as I got there so it didn't turn out to be that pleasant. It was slightly chilly and the permanently wet ground of this place definitely detracts from the enjoyment. The park did have WiFi coverage sponsored by MSN.

After a quick round through the area, I started my trek back up the giant hills to get back home. I was peddling away on the lowest gear and was struggling to climb the road all the way back home. It was so tiring... so tiring...

I'll leave you all with some photos:

Day 16 - Bank account
Saturday January 19, 2008

When we reached the end of our bank account opening process today, the best part of it was saved for last: picking cheque designs! The pink Hello Kitty cheque design was very, very tempting...

For those who were wondering, yes, this lucky bucky is still alive an well :)

Let's continue with the backlog of updates...

Day 15 - Commitments
Friday January 18, 2008

At the beginning of each internship at Microsoft, interns are required to write down their commitments, plans and accountabilities and submit them. This formalized process gives direction, purpose, and goals to all employees, managers and the entire organization in general.

As of today, my direction for the next four months has been set and a path of challenges lies ahead...

gloria / www.urbanebloc.com
you are going to have soooooo much fun d: lucky bucky!

Dan T.
lol that's true. why see the supersonics when you can see the Bulls run rough-shod over them?

Richard
Yeah go and enjoy yourself.

And Dan... most people only go to see the other team when your team sucks. Like sell-outs occurred all the time when Jordan came to play the cRaptors in Toronto.
