From the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Blog:
Seattle area weather update - 10:15 a.m. This storm has become stationary over the Seattle area. We could see as much as 6 additional inches of snow (this includes downtown Seattle). This will last though and beyond the morning commute. The temperatures are scheduled to drop as an arctic front. Icing is a major concern for the morning commute. Oh boy. I hope I make it to the airport safely on Saturday.

Too bad you won't come back in time for our 10-15cm. =(

The current state of Seattle/Redmond: SHUT DOWN
WFH... | |
Alex T. | |
There's still two more days before I jet out of here, but I'm all set escape this crazy environment of "Oh my gosh! The weather forecast says there will be snow today! I'm working from home!". But it didn't snow all day... the office was practically deserted, yet it was a beautiful winter day with even a hint of blue sky!
It's supposed to snow one to two inches of snow in Redmond overnight, so I'm expecting more no-shows tomorrow. Today's WFH notices was crazy premature, but you can't blame the parents who have to take care of the kids who have their classes cancelled due to the weather advisory. Imagine that - a snow day, with no snow! How insane is that? Oh west coast, how you boggle my mind... but I might be seeing more of it sometime in the near future...doo dee doo...?

Yep. v1 is pretty cool, Adrian - no set direction, build it all from the ground up. There's lots to get your hands dirty with. =)
Adrian | |
Sounds like you're having an awesome time Alex. Now you know what it's like to work on a v1 project! In my case, it was, partly just feeling your a way around, especially when you don't have a product to start testing for yet.

THANKS, Miss! =D | |
Richard | |
@Anonymous: I'm excited you're going to be here too! I have an address to ship things to for the next 4 months! Oh... and for your good job prospects and such...
Alex T. | |
@Anonymous You get to be here (well, not here, here, but here) too pretty soon! I'm so excited for that.
@Raymond When I was on the shuttle this afternoon reading your post, I looked up and saw a Redmond Police cruiser drive by. I could have sworn that I saw "Raymond Police" on the side of the vehicle instead.

^_____^ I'm *so* happy that you term was so rewarding for you Alex, and that you had such an amazing opportunity to mix together so many of your interests and passions!
I can only dream for such a rewarding experience of my own :) And when I read you choose Windows Live Movie Maker team instead of the Windows Live Photo Gallery team, I didn't think What? or Why?, I automatically thought of Mac Media ;)

Near-end of term update
It's about mid-December now and a lot has happened in the past few months of this internship at Microsoft. This seems to be a good time to wrap up and let everyone in on the happenings so far. Windows Live Social Networking First off, for those who don't already know, Windows Live Social Networking was my home for the first two months my internship. Social Networking at Microsoft? Yes. I was mysteriously placed in a foreign team up in the beautiful Red West campus to work on the next version of the Windows Live online services - Profiles, networks, friends, and the like was my fun for the first half of the internship. My job was to make sure that friends connected, communicated and updated each other in the new wave of Windows Live. Some days I would spend my time surfing Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, blogs, etc., all in the name of doing my job. How cool is that? It was definitely a great experience in learning about the web and the crazy operations that go into designing, producing and running such a massive operation. Hundreds of millions of users are using the services that I helped to test and pound out the bugs. Give it a spin and let me know how it is. So that was the online services portion - Windows Live. Windows Live Essentials Starting in the second half of my internship around the end of October, I had the opportunity to hop over to work on the other half of the package: Windows Live Essentials - the free downloadable applications that connect to the Windows Live services. In addition to Windows Live Messenger, that I'm sure all of you are familiar with and use on a daily basis, Windows Live Essentials also offers: - Windows Live Mail: the awesome Outlook Express replacement that connects you to Hotmail and the new Windows Live Calendar plus all your other e-mail accounts including Gmail, POP, IMAP, etc. - Windows Live Writer: a piece of extremely powerful blogging software used to post to Windows Live Spaces as well as all your other blogs like Wordpress, Typepad, Blogger, etc. (Those who use it swear by it and never go back to the horrible experience of web forms) - Windows Live Family Safety: Protect your kids from evils lurking around the web. (I guess most of you won't be needing this for a while) - Windows Live Photo Gallery: a photo and video organizer to keep track of all your digital memories (Now with face recognition and people tagging!) - Windows Live Movie Maker: Simplifying movie creation - you can create photo/video slideshows in 3 minutes and send them to grandma. Seriously. It's easy. Digital Memories Experience (DMX) Some of you may recall that back in April/May earlier this year at the end of my first internship at Microsoft, I was offered a position in the Digital Memories Experience group to work on Windows Live Photo Gallery, but that didn't happen when I came back in September. After my really great two months in Windows Live Social Networking, I was able to make a smooth transition back over to the Digital Memories Experience group with the help of a lot of people for which I am deeply grateful. Windows Live Photo Gallery - photos, photography, digital images, photos, photos, and more photos - this seemed like exactly what I was looking for in my ideal co-op job: photos and testing. (Some of you may be thinking: "What? Testing?! That's a junior job!" You have no idea how much I love breaking things and how much Microsoft values testing... but that's another story for later) When I made the transition over to the Digital Memories group at the end of October, I suddenly decided to join the Windows Live Movie Maker team instead of the Windows Live Photo Gallery team. "What? Why?!" you may be thinking, but I assure you, I had my reasons. Windows Live Movie Maker Not only does Windows Live Movie Maker deal with photos, but it also includes video and audio. That's +2 bonus already. Also, I also have those four years of Mac Media digital video editing and production experience and hair-pulling (hair?), blurry-eyed, endless nights fun with Adobe Premiere plus all its awesome quirks back in the day. I still can't believe we made some of those video back then... (oops. I spent the past hour re-watching the 2003-2004 Mac Media videos...back to typing) Now, everyday I go to work and I get to play with photos, videos and audio while trying to break the program that's rendering everything. I love my job. Windows Live Movie Maker is a v1 product - Version 1 - built from scratch from the ground up. We've built a solid foundation and I'm excited to see where thiswe can take this as we add features to it. Will I get to come back and work on this some more? I hope so... but I don't know if I can... waiting... waiting... waiting... This is the final week before my early flight back to Toronto 8:00 AM Saturday morning. Yay?

ASRock Instant Boot loads Windows in four seconds
That's how real engineers work - messy lab with lots of (useful) stuff everywhere, no casings, barebone exposed parts. I miss working at ATI/AMD...
Alex T. | |
@Dan What are you missing that's making it look not spiffy? You could ultra-spiff-ify your profile by choosing a dynamic theme that changes with time of day and weather too!
![]() ![]() Also, add in your Web Activities like Twitter, Flickr and your blog to fill in all that white space with interesting content ;)
Richard | |
Gotta put in the work to make it pretty. Though it really doesn't take that much effort. :)
Dan H. | |
Hey.... how come my profile doesn't look that spiffy??? lol
great work alex! | |
