UW TWSA Idol 2007 Finals at Fed Hall
滑鐵盧大學臺灣同學會之星光大道

The 5th annual TWSA Idol finals were held at Fed Hall last night. Twas very enjoyable. =)

All the performances provided great entertainment value. The audience also took part in voting for the finalists. Congratulations to Jennifer Cui for winning the contest.

Thanks to Scott for inviting me to the event.

Sorry about the quality of some of these photos... a massive cropping operation was in effect during processing due to my limited lens availability for the event. I shot the entire event with only my 50 mm prime lens...

I think 2 out of the 12 jobs I had interviewed for are filled. I can understand the jobs that had multiple positions open (like Morgan Stanley's 27 and TELUS's 22), but I feel bad for all the single opening jobs.

sounds like someone at NVIDIA HR decided to leave work early on Friday...without completing their rankings...!!!

come on guys...

lol

Alex T.
Interesting... I just received two more offers from NVIDIA... that brings my (now useless) offer count to 11.

NVIDIA - Systems Engineering
NVIDIA - Applications Engineering

So if I didn't have this Microsoft offer and if NVIDIA actually submitted these rankings in on time, at least I would know that my endless hours of phone interviews with them didn't go to waste! =)

So... now that match results have been completed, do you guys notice a lot of unfilled positions? Or is it just me...? I can understand this from the companies that just made offers and didn't rank other students, but I'm pretty sure some of these companies don't just do pure offers...

There still appears to be quite a good listing of jobs for second round, so don't worry guys and gals. :)

Congratulations, everyone! It's going to be an exciting term in January :) West coast, overseas, wow.

This is THE reason why students should come to Waterloo over other universities. The six co-op terms of Waterloo allows students to slowly build up their skills from first year all the way to fourth year. Then, we move up to crazier and crazier places. 16-month internships of other universities lock students into a position and this only happens after third year.

How does it feel to be ranked no. 1 with so many companies? Well, it's a giant leap of faith that these companies are taking in believing in me though I have had no industry experience with code development or board-level experience, in the case of the Product Engineer position at NVIDIA. I would like to thank them for that. I guess that's the essence of co-op? Hiring managers who interview you and see something special in you and what you can bring from your cumulative experience in previous co-op terms, no matter how irrelevant or simple the tasks were.

I would have gladly taken any position that was offered to me because all of them had their own thing that interested me.

Now to gather my thoughts on the interview process now that it's over...

I'm surprised that received an offer to be a QUALCOMM MobileView Intern. I don't quite remember that interview going that well. That was probably my first really technical interview early in the term and I felt like I bombed it. "So tell me about the stack and heap, allocating memory on the stack and heap and when would you do either" Oh my gosh, these simple questions that I should know, but I just didn't prepare for and I didn't care for so much. After that interview, I studied for interviews and these questions came up in a few more interviews later on. It feels like I've learned more from interviews, or from simply studying for interviews, than from class during this month.

I've now started a repository of interview questions and answers for future interview preparation sessions and for anyone who wants to practice. Adrian started a nice list before I did. Let me know if you want to contribute to it!

One of the most memorable interviews was the RIM Performance Associate interview at RIM 10. I mentioned all the key words, programs, skills and level of analysis that the interviewers were looking for in a potential candidate in their Blackberry Enterprise Server team. Even though I was the first interviewee of the day, they knew it would be extremely difficult to find another candidate with the relevant experience, skill set and interest that I had. They were very interested in my graduation date. I walked out of there feeling like a billion bucks - forget a million.

Contrasting that story, I walked out of the Microsoft SDET interview with the most unsure feeling in the world. Coincidentally, the technical interviewer was in the group that was responsible for the Windows Vista graphics and display technologies. My example I was trying to explain of the time I root-caused a difficult bug was related to Windows Vista graphics and display technologies. He knew exactly what I was talking about, so I had to be extra careful that I was saying the right things... that was quite nerve-racking. I was also expecting crazy technical questions, but they never came... I walked down the stairs to the awaiting group of other SDET candidates and laughed. "How was the interview?" they inquired. "I'm not sure at all," I replied. "It was... not technical at all..." As a result of that connection with the interviewer, I will be working in the base display team which is responsible for the validation of display drivers from AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, etc. It seems like I'll be working on something familiar, but from a very different perspective. I'm so excited. I think my parents are really proud ='). I'm tearing a bit as I type this.

I must say, Microsoft is REALLY into the hiring process even right after you've accepted their offer. Unlike other companies who simply snail mail you an employment contract and ignore you until you arrive at the start of the next term, Microsoft recruiters, managers and UW alumni personally email you, call you, and bombard you with contacts to congratulate you and ensure you have all your questions answered. New hires just feel cared for.

Again, congratulations, everyone =)

So where's everyone going to be?

Scott will be at Business Objects, I mean SAP ;)
Charing and Richard got Morgan Stanley.
Adrian will be with me at Microsoft.
Dan's returning to RIM. And Ken will join RIM?
Mark's returning to Genesis Microchip.
Farran's returning to AMD. Will John follow to AMD as well or take XE?
Sissy? Annie? Calvin? Liz? Gloria?

Alex T.
Thanks, Annie! =)

Annie
Congratulations, Alex!

Raymond
how does it feel to be ranked no.1 with many companies?

Richard
Morgan Stanley? London? Rooming buddies, Charing? :D

Congratulations again! :)

Congrats Alex!
The Jobmine exploit worked for me too! =)

Now I have to decide between just leaving the country or leaving the continent altogether =P

Congratulations again! :)

The JobMine exploit worked for me!

So here's the summary:
AMD - Software Component Quality Engineering (Working with Ricky!)
AMD - Software Engineering (Working with the Architect to break the driver)
Genesis Microchip - Applications Engineering
Genesis Microchip - Embedded Software Engineering (Working with Mark)
Microsoft - Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) (Also with Adrian, Kevin, and who else?)
NVIDIA - Product Engineer (Boards) - Intern (The 3 x 45 minute interview)
QUALCOMM - MobileView Intern (San Diego, California!)
RIM - Performance Associate
RIM - Software Tools Developer, Operating Systems

23 interviews, 9 offers, but I can only select one.

It's a tough one indeed, but I'm 100% sure I'll be heading to Microsoft.

The surprises of this round of offers are the Microsoft, QUALCOMM and the NVIDIA offers.

It's class time now, but I'll elaborate on my thoughts later this evening. Come back later to dig into my mind ;)

I just sent out my first offer rejection letter... I feel bad for the companies who ranked me number one, but I just can't be in x number of places at once, and the terms in the MS offer are just too good to refuse. I really do which I could take these other positions too. If only we had more work terms... It's actually good that the companies contacted me. This allowed the companies to make another offer to another student. Best of both worlds?

Now, to see what else I got from the companies who observed the guidelines and didn't contact the candidates...lol

1 PM...

I KNEW you were going to get Microsoft!

So does that mean my vacation is set for Reading week 08'? =P

Alex T.
THANKS! :D
What offers are you looking forward to, gloria?

And I just found out that I'll be working in the Windows Experience team. I'll fill everyone in on what exactly that means when I get more information myself =P
