Why 4 GB? Because Vista caches so much... I'd have space for SuperFetch and active working sets.

I'm planning on a 2 GB RAM upgrade on my notebook in a few months and that doesn't even have many programs on it. I've tested configs of 512 MB, 1 GB, 1.5 GB and 2 GB in the notebook. Vista and my programs run really nice with 2 GB in the system.

Richard
Why do 2 × 2GB? Even if you were running a 64-bit system, would you really ever need more than 4GB of memory which can run in the 4 slots available on just about every motherboard?

How much faster is RAID 0? I've never bothered settings up RAID (though I have lack of the number of hard drives).

I definitely need a new computer though. I've sort of taken a backseat when it comes to storing and developing my RAW files because I don't have enough space to store them... and then developing them is incredibly slow. Thank goodness for Lightroom or else it'd be an even slower process. I never realized how inefficient Bridge --> ACR was until I used Lightroom (which is slower than a tortoise even now).

Farran's the one who gets to play with the new graphics cards. He's in desktop discrete. I get to work with value budget notebooks that run on integrated graphics...and do so very nicely - very cool and quiet.

Even if I bought the latest and greatest, I sadly can't handle it. No PCI-Express, dinky power supply, a case that has my hard drives in the way of the video card, a four-year CPU and memoy, the list goes on and on... I'm sadly not about to get a new system just to run a new video card! =P

But if I were to assemble a new system... it would probably look like this:

  • Dual core CPU (I'll leave this up to your imagination)

  • 2 x 1GB DDR2 (yes, I could do 2 x 2 GB, but due to a 32-bit OS and hardware/software limitation, max usable memory would only reach 3.12 GB on Vista)

  • Motherboards these days come with everything including the kitchen sink (audio, USB, FireWire, Gigabit Ethernet (sometimes 2), some come with WiFi too...)

  • 500 GB SATA II or RAID 0 again (which I've had for my last two systems and really really love the speed)

  • SATA DVD-burner (let's get rid of all these old PATA ribbons...

  • 600W+ PSU

  • Probably an Antec P-160 with window aluminum case (I can't go back to steel... aluminum is sooo light

Gosh, Raymond's system is so sweet. Even though it was built half a year ago, it develops RAW photos instantly...unlike my current AMD Athlon XP2500+, 1 GB RAM setup...

Raymond
exactly u should have something that beats the crap out of everything

Dan H.
Alex, you're the one who WORKS at AMD/ATI, you should have the graphics cards that are unreleased!!! prototypes man! prototypes!

Alex T.
Okay, maybe only 2 generations ahead... but still...

Alex T.
and his video card that's three generations ahead of all of ours...

Core 2 Duo.. no just Duos for the desktop space.

Timbo
Be quite Raymond, you and your core 2 duo, or was it just duo? I can't remember. But nevertheless, SHHHHH!

Raymond
I'm sorry but you two are missing out of so much not able to play CNC3

mammoth tank will make you drool

Richard
Haha... love this tech support. Um... P4 2.8Ghz Prescott, 1GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9550 (believe it's a Sapphire). Don't remember the last version I had installed before I upgraded to the latest release on ATI's website (May 31, 2007)... also I don't know where to find this dump file. It just blue screened and said "Memory dumped" before resetting. Don't you love this vagueness?

Alex T.
My computer doesn't handle C&C3 either. The demo was crawling along...

What's the system configuration, version, and info about this dump?

Richard
Generals? You've gotta graduate to C&C3... my computer will never handle it, but there is a demo for my 360...

In other news, sorry Alex, but Catalyst drivers are poo poo. It's caused my computer to core dump twice in three days upon starting my computer (after not causing issues for months). I've never had these problems with my old NVIDIA card... Oooh... thems fightin' words.

Alex T.
I'm still slowly getting the hang of Generals after many months hiatus...

Raymond
make the theme of the new GDI mammoth tank!!! lol

Alex T.
And this box is STILL pink...hmm... time for change.

What is with all the "limited edition" pink stuff? Pink RAZR, pink Zune? pink NEC Hello Kitty Swarovski crystal notebook? (which might I add, is a very good notebook platform underneath. I should know, I support the program in Applications Engineering)

Oh I love my job. Pink notebooks...

oh nobody forgot Richard :)

which makes alex comment "made it sound like Google made it" so applicable. "made" "bought" same thing these days ;)

lol

Richard
Well who hasn't tried to buy some cool new startup or buyout some competition? People seem to forget Google's acquisitions and concentrate on the big bad Microsoft whenever they lift a finger.

Man, Microsoft should pay me for all the pro-MS, anti-Apple/Google spin I constantly deliver.

Anonymous
well a start-up created it, and then Microsoft bought them :) so maybe...?
whatever... lalalalalalaa

Now Photosynth I've tried. The presenter's choice of words made it sound like Google made it. It was almost getting to the point of "Oraganizing the world's information".

Cool.

Alex T.
f-a-c-e-b-o-o-k? Qu'est-ce que c'est?

Scott
Haha.. just wait until someone writes a "Create your own CSS" facebook application

Richard
It will never get to the customizability that MySpace has... and thank goodness for that. Facebook will always have their clean lines, and for that, the collective Internet pats them on the back.

Timbo
Has anyone tried microsoft's Photosynth yet?

It looks incredible, check out the demo.
