Weblog Braunschweig Waterloo Exchange 2004/2005

Arrival

Arrival of the engineering students in Toronto on August 27th.

Engineering holidays

take-off

Just after arriving in Waterloo, we had our own car…at least for one week.

Montreal

The journey took us to Montreal, a mandatory visit for every exchange student here (fltr: Sven, Wolfgang, Stefan and Jörn Marten photographed by Sascha)

The Basilique Notre-Dame: One of many churches in Montreal but it is said to be one of the most beautyful ones in North America.

Ottawa

During the trip before our classes started, we also visited Ottawa. Here we are standing in front of the Houses of Parliament.

Of course we visited the capital of our guest country, Ottawa. It has very historic and political style. It is nice to stay at the Rideau Channel (above) for hours

Ottawa's skyline is domi-nated by the parliament buildings. Our hint for all the next generations: visit whatever you want but don’t skip Ottawa:

This is the famous Sven. He is mainly known for his huge beer consumption.

Algonquin national park

In Algonquin national park we rented canoes, enjoyed the wonderful weather during the first day, admired the clear sky in the night and woke up in heavy rain. That’s Canada as well.

Rowing on the Canoe Lake.

Having Dinner at one of the small camping areas, which are distributed all over the park.

Reini

Reini and his birthday present. On September 10th, we went to his home to surprise him with our little present from Germany: an orginal Kuckucks clock.

Reinis Birthday (~2 MB)

Before Christmas, Reini invited all exchange students from Braunschweig and Hamburg to a great dinner. It was a really enjoyable evening.
Reini’s retirement: After 36 years in Waterloo it is obviously hard to go, but he promised he will still superwise our exchange as long as he stays healty. (Thanks Reini in the name of all the former, current and future Braunschweig students.)

University

Stefan and Sven in the “cell biology” lecture…
…but sometimes Stefan could study with more passion.

Exams in the physical activity center...without comment.

Braunschweig Presentation

In our Germany presentation we tried to persuade Canadians to study in our country. We generated a lot of interest and hopefully some future plans.

Columbia Lake Village

Columbia Lake in the summer, winter...

...and in Indian Summer.

German Banquet

One official highlight of the Braunschweig-Waterloo exchange program is the traditional German banquet in the Transylvania Club. It is amazing how many German students are studying in Waterloo.

Also, we had another opportunity to make a picture of Reini and our group.

Bio-Info Presentation

For our Course in Bioinformatics one of the group projects was to create a scientific poster, explaining a common technique. During the presentation everybody was invited to ask questions.
