Discussion:
Wireless
- research labs
- results of site survey in big Mech / Civil labs - excellent
coverage with very few base stations
- agreement expressed that this is definately an inexpensive route
for areas which would otherwise be very expensive - lots of
conduit.
- wireless might be appropriate in some Chemical labs
- requirement - must be firewalled somehow
- EC firewalling available for free anywhere in
Engineering
- may use MAC address lists on upstream switch or
directly at
base station to
restrict access to few trusted machines
- Mike Herz is investigating other firewalling
options
- WEP not good enough to be used alone
- student and general areas
- Davis Centre is fully coverred, and so will be several areas
in Engineering complex where students tend to congregate
- coverage is an experiment to determine need - can we justify
greater coverage in the future.
