Erick: Announced that Bell internet agreement signed, which will provide high speed internet access over the phone lines, simultaneously with voice and fax. Available this fall. Limitted to 3.5km radius.
Erick: IST has created two dedicated name servers ns1 and ns2, 129.97.128.10 and 129.97.128.100
Erick: IST has developed a different password weakness tester available via x-hier. Formerly cracklib, now pwcheck.
Beth: High performance computing proposal with SGI did not go through.
Bruce: Network problems relating to 100 half/full/auto mismatches. These problems must be corrected on all clients before CIFS home directories proceed.
Bruce: Staged move to GUIBOOT and CIFS home directory planned. GUIBOOT is a prerequisite for the CIFS home directory on N:\. Users using the CIFS N:\ disk will only be able to login to GUIBOOT machines, however users with the Watstar N:\ disk can login anywhere. We will not be moving all 1000 Engineering Waterloo Polaris computers, and all 10,000 or so Engineering users to GUIBOOT and CIFS on Sept 1, rather it will be staged.
Erick: GUIBOOT. Mid July the GAFF will be GUIBOOT. No office machines until later in the Fall. GUIBOOT required for CIFS N:\ home disk. Login time is 30-45 seconds. Hopefully GUIBOOT will correct the sporadic NT print problem Mike has detected. Mike volunteered to be early for GUIBOOT. Implications for some DOS programs - there will be no straight DOS capability, thus ACCT cannot be run on a GUIBOOT machine at all. Sysadmins will have to investigate their DOS applications if any. ASPEN has known problems.
Bernie: Questions about the level of support for CAS from IST.
Bruce: Noted that newdelphi can sometimes take a long time to perform CAS transactions
