Warning: campus wireless rules are changing!
The Internet and the campus networks are under constant attack from spam, viruses and other malware.  To keep the network operable, we must ensure all campus computer (including wireless) meet some minimum standards.

New rules will be in place effective August 29, 2005, but now is the best time to get started securing your system.

Secure your computer - this helps keep the bad guys out. Setup antivirus, firewalling, critical patches, etc.

Secure applications - TELNET, FTP, Email, X-Windows and many older applications were designed when the Internet was between a small group of trusting people.  Then it grew up!  You can still do all the same things, but learn how to do them using encrypted channels, so your passwords aren't visible to hackers.

Secure yourself - you probably wouldn't eat gum off the sidewalk because you don't know where it has been.  If you download and run applications from the web, your computer and data is at risk, and if you run as administrator... you are running with scissors.  Learn how to be a smart user on the Internet.
