Rental Car, Norman’s Human Action Cycle

See notes on the Human Action Cycle. 8 marks for correctly using the cycle to explain the event, 1 per level. This question was presented in the tutorial.

Goal: Survive the Japanese attack and protect the planes

Intention:flying the new P-47 Thunderbolt

Sequence of actions: ran to the ready-room, found a free plane, identified the controls

(could not find the right controls to actually fly the plane)

Actions: physical actions of running, finding, identifying, eluding

World: the plane was raced up, down, across, and around the airstrip on the island

Perception state of the world: physically seeing and sensing the plane moving relative to the bombs dropping

Interpreting the perception: the bombs did not hit the plane

Evaluation of interpretation: the goal was achieved (even the plane did not take flight)

The gulf of execution occurs between intention and action. The intention was to fly the plane. The pilot was not able to find the actions to meet this intention.

1 mark for identifying the gulf. 1 mark for explaining it clearly. Total of 10 marks.
