Typically, as in the case in this film, information overload results from a lack of integrated information (1) seen here as many low level displays (1). This forces the operator to perform the integration in his/her head (1), a case of keeping knowledge in the head (1) which adds to mental workload (1). In contrast, better information displays which integrate information (1) would put knowledge in the world (1), improving performance.
The key to answering this question is to realize that the main problem with information overload is that the integration of the information must be performed in the head. Review Norman's concepts of Knowledge in the Head vs. Knowledge in the World.
(3x1 mark) Why is information reduction not a good solution to information overload?
Information reduction is not a good solution because in some circumstances the pilot/user may need the information.
Only solutions that express that the problem with reduction is that the information is no longer there, would be accepted for this question.
