This $1,000 Scholarship was established in 1989 by family and friends in memory of the late Karen Mark, a third-year Chemical Engineering student. The Scholarship is awarded annually to a female third-year undergraduate Engineering student based on excellent academic achievement and demonstrated involvement in and contribution to student life at the University of Waterloo. The award is funded from a special endowment and the winner is selected from recommendations submitted by the departments.
In recognition of the late Professors Saip Alpay and Wm. C. Nichol, and the former Engineering students Sam Ceccerallo and Robert Elligsen, the Memorial Leadership Award is granted to an intermediate-level undergraduate student in the Faculty of Engineering who has demonstrated outstanding contributions to the Faculty in the promotion of extra-curricular activities, including, but not limited to: Intramural Athletics, promotion of Engineering Society and Sandford Fleming Foundation events, competitions, etc., and for the support of associations, both on and off campus.
For more details, see the left-hand menu.
The Sandford Fleming Foundation's primary objective is to foster and create an enriched academic environment for co-operative engineering students. Undergraduate students may wish to have hands-on co-operative education experiences that are interdisciplinary in nature. The Sandford Fleming Foundation makes URAs and Co-op awards of various amounts to assist undergraduate students to meet these goals.
The Sandford Fleming Interdisciplinary URAs and Co-op Awards were initiated to assist in the support of undergraduate students extending and applying their engineering skills to related disciplines (e.g. Applied Health Sciences, Arts (including Social Sciences), Environmental Studies, Mathematics, and Science). In all cases, a clear basis and connection to engineering the other discipline must be presented. It was the original intent that these would be used to enable these collaborative and interdisciplinary experiences in situations in which other support did not exist. To meet requests for this support and to assist applicants in preparing their requests, the following information has been prepared to describe the categories of award requests.
There are two general categories of award requests which may be considered:
This award supports undergraduate research assistantships (URAs) that are co-supervised by professors in the Faculty of Engineering and professors in other Faculties. This award is intended to enable URA opportunities in situations where financial support may otherwise not be available. An application for this award should include the Academic Co-Supervisors’ names, Departments, and faculty affiliations; a brief paragraph (300-500 words) describing the proposed project and its relationship to your engineering education and the complementary area; a brief indication of the role of each supervisor; evidence of financial support for the remainder of the URA (typically $300); and brief letters of support from each the Academic Co-Supervisors.
This award supports academic co-op placements that are co-supervised by professors in the Faculty of Engineering and professors in other Faculties. This award is intended to enable interdisciplinary co-operative education opportunities in situations where financial support may otherwise not be available. Applicants for this award should first discuss their intent to apply with the Waterloo Campus Committee Chair of the SFF. An application for this award should include the Academic Co-Supervisors’ names, Departments, and faculty affiliations; a brief paragraph (300-500 words) describing the proposed project and its relationship to your engineering education and the complementary area; a brief indication of the role of each supervisor; evidence of financial support equalling a total amount at least two times the requested amount; and letters of support from each the Academic Co-Supervisors.
