Windows 2000
Microsoft Positioning
- finally, a really networked OS - not a network of standalones
- fills in many security and management gaps traditionally left
to Polaris or other 3rd party technology
- will surpise standalone 95 or NT users, expecting an upgrade, whereas
this is a corporate deployed configuration - if done right
- not meant to be deployed ad hoc
Reality Check for W2K
- Caution - lots of new code, traditionally Microsoft takes several releases. 95's network memory leak only fixed in summer of 97!
- Backwards Compatibility Issues - many applications will not install or
work correctly. Majority of applications were tested only with '95
- Preparation - this will be the next major client platform,
will replace 95 as the standard corporate desktop platform
Polaris Take on W2K
Server
- W2k server in our server rooms for Directory/Active Directory/LDAP
- re-evaluate for certain other pieces, eg. Appfilers
Client
- set up lab of Polaris for W2K for high end workstations
- plan eventual migration to W2K... timing will be partly motivated
by financial issues
- all of our various servers are (becoming) W2K-ready
