Interdisciplinary research from a Systems Engineering perspective on the development of conflict resolution, multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA), time series analysis and other decision-making methodologies for addressing challenging systems management problems lying at the interface of society, technology and the environment, with applications in water resources management, hydrology, environmental engineering, sustainable development, and elsewhere.

On April 27, 2006, the Senate of Ecole Centrale de Lille, one of France’s highly respected Grand Ecoles, voted to award K.W. Hipel a Doctor of Engineering Degree (DEng), Honouris Causa, for his exceptional contributions to the development of Systems Engineering methodologies with applications in multiple domains. The ceremony will take place in France in 2007.

- Organized and edited with Prof. Nathalie Cassaigne of the Decision Technologies Group, University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), Manchester, United Kingdom, a special issue of the journal IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Part C, Vol. SMC – 33, No. 1, 2003, in honour of Professor Madan G. Singh who passed away on March 26, 2002.
- Organized and carried out research for three edited issues of Water Resources Bulletin as well as three associated monographs published by the American Water Resources Association (AWRA) on the topics of multiple objective decision making, nonparametric tests and time series analysis (see Hipel (1992, 1988, 1985) under Edited Books).
- Organized and edited, with Dr. Diana Yakowitz of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Tucson, Arizona, a special issue of the journal, "Applied Mathematics and Computation" on the topic of "Multiple Objective Decision Making in Environmental Management" (Vol. 83, No.’s 2 and 3, 1997). Some of the papers are based on presentations originally given at "Malama 'Aina 95, The first International Conference on Multiple Objective Decision Support Systems for Land, Water and Environmental Management: Concepts, Approaches and Applications", held at the East-West Center, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii, July 23-28, 1995.
- Organized and edited a special issue of the journal of "Stochastic Hydrology and Hydraulics" on the topic of "Stochastic and Statistical Methods in Hydrology and Environmental Engineering" (Vol. 9, No's 1 to 3, 1995) in honour and memory of Prof. T.E. Unny. Some of the papers are based upon presentations originally given at the International Conference on "Stochastic and Statistical Methods in Hydrology and Environmental Engineering," chaired and organized by K.W. Hipel, and held at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, June 21-23, 1993.
- Organized and edited with Prof. K.J. Radford a special issue of the journal "Group Decision and Negotiation" on the topic of "Decision Making under Conditions of Conflict" (Vol. 3, No's 2 to 4, 1994). The papers in the issue were originally presented at the international conference on "Decision Making under Conditions of Conflict," chaired and organized by K.W. Hipel and K.J. Radford, and held at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, from August 31 to September 2, 1992.
- Organized and completed research for an edited special issue on Conflict Analysis for the journal, "Information and Decision Technologies" (Vol. 16, No.'s 3 and 4, 1990).
K.W. Hipel has been the Chair or Co-Chair and main organizer of four international conferences (1978, 1992, 1993, and 2006) and been an active member of the scientific planning committee of about 40 other conferences, many of which involved the planning and chairing of special tracks of sessions. For example, in 1993, he organized and chaired the international conference on "Stochastic and Statistical Methods in Hydrology and Environmental Engineering: An International Conference in Honour of Professor T.E. Unny", which was held at the University of Waterloo from June 21‑23, 1993. This constituted the first of a sequence of conferences held in Kyoto (1996), Brisbane (1999), Dresden (2002) and Adelaide (2008). Since 1991, Hipel has helped to organize and chair special tracks of sessions on “Conflict and Risk Analysis in Systems Management” at the annual international conferences of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society.

- Co-Chair and Co-Organizer with Professor Bruce Mitchell of “The Royal Society of Canada Symposium for the Southwestern Ontario Region – Collaborative Partnerships and Connecting Research with the Community”. T he event was jointly hosted by the University of Waterloo, the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI) in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The morning sessions and a formal luncheon were held at CIGI while the afternoon sessions and a reception took place at PI. In attendance were Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada, renowned Researchers and Administrative Personnel from the three host institutions, Heads of Missions and Senior Diplomatic Staff from member nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), as well as Officials from Foreign Affairs Canada. Subsequent to the conference, a special website was developed within the IGLOO system of CIGI. The symposium was held on April 27, 2006.
- Member of the Advisory Committee for the “3 rd International Symposium on Systems and Human Science: Complex Systems for Safety, Security and Reliability (SSR 2006)” held in the Palais Daun Kinsky, Vienna, Austria from March 6-8, 2006.

The Symposium will be held on Friday November 24, 2006 in Ottawa as part of the annual three-day meeting of the Royal Society of Canada.
- Organized with Bruce Mitchell a one-day Southwest Ontario Regional Symposium of the Royal Society of Canada on the topics “Collaborative Partnerships and Connecting Research with the Community”. The symposium took place in Waterloo on Thursday April 27, 2006 at the Centre for International Governance (CIGI) and the Perimeter Institute for the morning and afternoon sessions, respectively.

- From March 11 to 17, 2005, K.W. Hipel represented the Royal Society of Canada at the Inter American Network of Academies of Science (IANAS) Meeting of the Steering Committee of the IANAS Water Programme held in Bogota, Colombia on March 12 th and 13 th, as well as at an associated technical visit to water facilities located in and around Bogota, and academic visits to Colombian universities.
