A MESSAGE FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Ting Tsui Professor and Program Director

Welcome to the 2022 Nanotechnology Engineering Program Capstone Design project symposium. This is an opportunity for our outstanding senior students to showcase their innovative designs and solutions to challenging engineering problems. Students in the Nanotechnology Engineering Program develop expertise in many disciplines through rigorous course work and laboratory training in the areas of chemistry, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, biology and materials. During the past year, students identified, conceptualized and prototyped their novel devices and systems. They were mentored by our program instructors and utilized state-of-the-art laboratory equipment on the UW campus to achieve their project goals. Our students have demonstrated resilience and determination during wave after wave of COVID-19 impacts. They continued to attend in-person laboratory courses and developed valuable hands-on skills in nanofabrication, characterization, synthesis and design. On this site, you will find projects that create novel low-cost devices to detect bacterial toxins, invent new biodegradable plastic materials for single-use applications, develop a next-generation of flexible batteries, design a strain sensor for virtual reality glove applications and feature other innovative ideas. These exciting achievements demonstrate how our soon-to-be graduates can use their nanotechnology engineering skills to contribute to the betterment of society. The Class of 2022 is comprised of some of the most resilient students I have ever met. They have not only overcome the adversity created by COVID, they have accomplished remarkable engineering achievements. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank those who have contributed to the success of the Capstone Design program through mentorship and/or sponsorship.

Sincerely,
