Donor and Student Profiles

Bill Anderson
Bill Anderson attended UW as an engineering undergraduate student in the '70s, began his career in the petrochemicals industry for a few years, and then returned to UW for graduate studies. After earning an MASc and PhD - in chemical engineering at UW - he never left. Download Bill's Profile

Fiora Li
Flora Li is a busy and industrious electrical engineering student who is completing her fourth year of PhD studies at Waterloo. Li was originally attracted to UW because of its world-renowned undergraduate engineering program. She is grateful for her co-op work terms which provided her with a deeper understanding of the theories taught in the classroom. She is a member of the Giga-to-Nanoresearch group in Electrical and Computer Engineering and considers herself fortunate to have had so many remarkable experiences as a UW student. For example, as part of her master’s research, she has the unique opportunity to obtain industrial work experience developing digital image sensors. Download Fiora's Profile

Michael Halinski
A healthy dose of sibling rivalry never hurts –that’s what initially motivated Michael Halinski to seek UW’s renowned Engineering program, after his older sister started her university career in UW’s Applied Health Sciences. Of course, he was also keenly interested in the discipline! Now a second year Mechanical Engineering student, the Grimsby native has been enjoying the prestige of his program. “When I was introduced to my new co-workers on a recent work term, I was met with immediate recognition of UW’s excellence,” Michael says. Rick Haldenby
Some people might say that Rick Haldenby is following in the footsteps of his paternal grandfather and father –both were prominent Toronto architects. But people who know Rick would be more likely to say that the School of Architecture’s Director is charting a new path, one that is having an exceptional impact on current and future architecture students. Rick’s career has taken him down many roads –teacher, project manager, fundraiser, service to the profession, government and community relations, and most recently the champion for the new School in Cambridge. Rob Gorbet
As winner of the Faculty of Engineering Teaching Excellence Awards, Professor Rob Gorbet’s students describe him as accessible, easy to talk to, and that he goes out of his way to help them understand difficult concepts. Rob thrives on the variety and flexibility in his job and enjoys wearing many hats –teacher, researcher, manager, administrator, artist, mentor, counsellor, and champion for the FIRST Robotics competition at UW. Rob’s best memory at UW is yet to come –“It will be the opening ceremonies of the inaugural FIRST Robotics Waterloo Regional in March 2005!” Download Rob's Profile
