Helices: Introduction

  • A helix is generated by a point moving on a cylindrical or conical surface
  • Its angular speed is constant and it advances in the axial direction at constant rate
  • To sketch out the side view of a single screw thread requires basic layout of a number of helices defining external edges and root corners of the thread
  • These will take form of sinusoidal curves
