Working irregular hours causes a misalignment in the circadian rhythm of shift workers, which impedes their cognitive capacity and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease along with certain types of cancer. Research shows that controlling the intensity and duration of an applied light stimulus can optimally shift sleep cycles and improve alertness. Alectrona aims to accomplish this by analyzing body temperature and sleep-wake cycles as physiological markers to appropriately time light exposure, which re-entrains the circadian rhythm to align with an irregular work schedule.

Sport-related concussions occur up to 3.8 million times a year. In the National Football League alone, sport-related concussions occur more than once every 2 games. While helmet design has improved in recent years, there has been minimal innovation in the chinstrap as an energy absorbing component. Pygo is a football helmet chinstrap which leverages relative motion to redirect energy away from the brain. Inspired by the NFL’s $3 million innovation challenge, Pygo aims to make sport safer for professional and youth athletes alike.

Pressure injuries remain a significant problem for people who have reduced mobility. U-Turn is a wearable activity monitor which helps people to manage pressure injuries at home. The system consists of a wearable sensor working alongside a companion app. By tracking and summarizing position throughout the day, U-Turn is able to draw key insights and actionable feedback to assist in pressure injury prevention. Through this, U-Turn aims to empower the people at risk along with their family-friend caregivers to better achieve care goals together.

Post-ACL reconstruction physiotherapy is recommended for at least 6-9 months. The goal of our project is to track and monitor the recovery of adult athletes following ACL reconstruction and compare it to return-to-sport criteria. Factors that increase risk of ACL re-injury include differences between the legs, particularly deficits in strength and flexibility. Our solution provides patients with real-time feedback during their exercises, to evaluate their progress and compare it to return-to-sport criteria and enables them to play an active, informed role in their recovery.
