dcr.

1

Farmers need to make critical decisions about how to manage their crops and irrigation. There are several soil metrics that are key indicators of soil and crop health. Collecting this data is costly and time-consuming – limiting farmers to performing soil analysis only once every 1-3 years. dcr. is a low-cost, autonomous soil data collection system for small-scale farmers to continuously monitor soil conditions. A rover gathers data from in-ground soil sensors to display on a web application, allowing farmers to better understand their field conditions.

Bexter

2

Bexter (Bex, the EXemplary Teaching and Engaging Robot) is a supplementary tool that teaches non-verbal children with autism spectrum disorder how to communicate using an Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) board. Bexter, as an at-home therapy device, will fill in long wait times associated with speech therapy services, as well as handle trivial repetitive tasks. Bexter uses modelling as a means of teaching AAC by reading a story book while pointing to key words on an AAC board, as a therapist would in a therapy session.

Firefighter Locators

3

Our project is a wearable 3 dimensional position tracking system designed to be used by firefighters in emergency situations, with functionality to assist in locating other firefighters using haptics feedback, and provide status updates to fire captains monitoring the situation.

Pragmatica

4

Currently, 1 in 12 children have a communicative disorder such as Autism and struggle to express their wants/needs, which results in a reduced quality of life for them and their parents. However, speech therapy is costly and has limited availability due to long wait lists.

Pragmatica is an autonomous VR Speech Therapy platform that provides immersive social simulations that the user can practice at home. Users can select from a prescribed catalog of situations that guide the user through a specific interaction.

NEO

The electrification revolution is here, and the roads once built to support the logistics networks of the future were never designed to support battery electric vehicles. At the same time, air pollution from particulate matter and greenhouse gases is having serious economic effects on cities. While these costs for infrastructure rehabilitation and pollution are not borne by the private sector directly, cities and planning agencies have a fiduciary and political interest in reducing them. At NEO, our goal is to quantify these externality costs associated with existing and future fleets and optimize the routing of these vehicles.
