The population in the GTA has created an environment in which property value has risen beyond the purchasing power of many its citizens. Kickoff Consulting has been retained to provide an economically sustainable community design with consideration to government assisted affordable housing. Kickoff has been provided with an existing industrial property that will be revitalized into a new vibrant community. The goal of the project is to develop a mixed-use subdivision that fosters a sense of community and inclusivity.

The effects of COVID-19 were detrimental to Canada and its citizens. Numerous healthcare facilities took a tremendous toll as demand exceeded the available resources. As a result, an increase in capacity is required to treat the infected population. WCLR Consulting engaged in the design of temporary relocatable prefabricated healthcare facilities in the City of Toronto. This solution seeks to increase the service capacity of treatments within the city and provide sufficient shelter for the extreme climates of Canada in future pandemic situations.

BMO Field Stadium Expansion: In 2018, Canada was awarded the right the co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In preparation for the tournament, Toronto proposed the expansion of the BMO Field stadium from an existing capacity of 30,000 up to at least 45,500. Incorruptible Structures has proposed a design solution that increases the seating capacity to more than 45,500, integrates seamlessly with the existing stadium from both a structural and stadium operations perspective, and allows for continued hosting of CFL football games by incorporating removable stand sections.

Timber construction can provide an environmentally conscious and aesthetic alternative to more traditional concrete and steel structures. Recent research from highly respected academic institutions around the world has produced new support for taller and longer span timber construction. In response to demand from The Region of Waterloo, D3 has designed a timber hockey rink for community use. D3’s design drew from computational design theory as well as traditional timber design methods to produce a truly one of a kind long-span timber folded plate dome.

Due to the rapid development and population growth in Waterloo, the existing transportation infrastructure along University Avenue West cannot sufficiently accommodate the growing demand of vehicular traffic and active transportation, as traffic volumes for all modes are projected to increase significantly in the near future. Therefore, HomeStay Consulting Group has been retained by the Region of Waterloo to redesign University Avenue West to improve future traffic operations and active transportation facilities from the intersection at Westmount Road to the intersection at King Street North.

The City of Brampton is poised for significant short- and long- term growth as they continue to combat rapid population increases within the GTA. From 2016-2041, the City of Brampton forecasts that its population will grow from 594,000 to 900,000. New residential developments will be required to meet growing housing demands, and this population increase puts a heavy burden on transportation infrastructure. UVG is proposing a cost-effective mixed-use development that minimizes vehicle trips and carbon offset, while upholding sustainability through low impact development technologies.

The Mississauga City Centre area is experiencing constant economic and population growth. This growth, as well as the construction of the Hurontario LRT stop, is expected to increase the ridership levels of the area’s two transit terminals and the vehicular traffic levels on the adjacent roads. BARE Consulting Services is proposing a state-of-the-art transportation hub to mitigate the safety risks related to the growth. The hub will be designed to provide safe, efficient, and convenient transfers between the various transit services in the area.

Many New Zealand homes built before the 1980s are considered unhealthy to live in due to poor interior conditions. The effects of living in these conditions include increased respiratory illnesses, higher rates of winter mortality, and negative impacts on mental health. To address this widespread problem, Kiwi Building Science is designing a building enclosure retrofit for an unhealthy 1940s home located in Auckland. Ultimately, the goal is to use the retrofit design of this home on similarly styled unhealthy homes throughout the Auckland Region.
