The City of Cambridge requires a new river crossing over the Speed River along Black Bridge Road located in Hespeler Village. The site as it currently stands consists of a single lane, heritage truss bridge that is functionally obsolete and requires replacement and repurposing. The new river crossing needs to accommodate the increasing traffic demands of the area it services while maintaining the aesthetically pleasing scenery of the surrounding environment.

REVIVIFY

The Environmental Sustainability Strategy outlines the University of Waterloo’s commitment to operating the campus sustainably by transitioning to a low carbon economy and providing naturalization of urban areas. REVIVIFY proposes a hypothetical redesign of the East Campus area due to its immense potential for redevelopment and contribution towards the University’s sustainability goals. The redesign shall consist of energy efficiency analysis and structural design of a new concrete reinforced building along with an updated site layout to include green space for recreational activities.

The Government of Ontario is requesting a transit alternative between the Region of Waterloo and Toronto Pearson Airport. The solution must be cost-effective, competitive with the existing modes of transportation and sustainable. Highway and public transit between the two hubs can be slow and unreliable, this problem will only worsen with time as the population continues to grow. XERTZ Consulting has proposed a high-speed rail to solve these issues and provide and new transit alternative with the potential for expansion across Canada in the future.

Four Iron Blocks

The City of Toronto is one of the largest cities in Canada and was a leader in industrialization. Due to industrialization, many properties were subject to environmental contaminants and there are now many vacant plots of land where expansion or redevelopment is difficult. Four Iron Blocks aims to redevelop a contaminated site into a profitable project while incorporating cost-effective remediation methods. We are striving to become an example for other contaminated sites so that more areas of Toronto can be redeveloped.

The University of Waterloo plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and has committed to improving its buildings’ energy efficiency. The university has several old, poor performing buildings with uncomfortable indoor conditions that require intervention. EMBODY Consulting is performing a deep energy retrofit of the building envelope of the Court low-rise residence buildings. The goals are to (1) reduce energy consumption to achieve Net-Zero-ready performance targets, (2) enhance occupant comfort and maximize thermal resiliency and, (3) analyze the solar potential to achieve Net-Zero Energy performance.

The collapse of a bridge may result not only in economic losses but also in injuries and even death. Most bridges located on seismic zones along the United States have not been retrofitted to follow current codes and standards. One of the most common failures is the catastrophic failure of their reinforced concrete columns. The Blue Ladder Group will provide a column retrofit solution on a representative bridge located in Utah by using shape memory alloys (SMAs), improving its strength and performance under earthquake loading.

Future-Oriented (FOr) Mobility Ltd.

The City of Waterloo is interested in transforming key under-utilized spaces into vibrant, urban cores to facilitate sustainable growth in the coming decades. Particularly, the lands surrounding Waterloo’s Conestoga Mall have significant redevelopment and intensification potential due to the existing ION LRT and GRT bus systems, nearby post-secondary campuses, and central business districts of Kitchener-Waterloo. Thus, FOr Mobility is proposing a mobility-focused development plan with complete streets, more efficient land uses, increased connectivity, and improved safety. Improved right-of-way design and transit access/analysis have been considered.

In response to the ever-growing mass of single-use disposable medical wear, an innovative and sustainable use of these materials has the potential to not only generate revenue from a new product or material, but also mitigate or eliminate a growing ecological issue. The implementation of these products in the building material and building science sectors of industry is the scope of this project.
