Personal all-season modes of transportation that are accessible and economical are currently scarce. According to our market research, 79% of people would prefer to have a micro-mobility option available to them. A.S.T.S (All Season Transportation System) aims to tackle this problem by posing as an affordable, environmentally friendly, and all-season individualized mobility scooter. One of its distinctive features is a snowboard attachment allowing it to be used during winter. This electric device also promotes sustainability which is essential as we transition into a greener world!

In 2022 alone, part defects cost auto makers over $700 million USD.
clearShear looks to save auto makers money by characterizing metal deformation mechanism using innovative, custom-designed, high-precision research equipment. clearShear uses intelligent imaging and sensor data to capture real-time material strain measurements. The data collected will enable auto makers to predict and prevent critical sheet metal defects.

WAAM

Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is a growing field of 3D printing leveraging welding processes with applications in automated die repair and aerospace manufacturing. In WAAM, weld bead height is not consistent compared to conventional 3D printing. To produce a high quality part with consistent layer thickness, accurate weld bead height feedback is required. Our team has been working on an active sensing system that accurately measures and records the height of a weld bead deposited and is lower-cost and more compact than existing solutions.

UWFM Aerodynamics
17
The University of Waterloo Formula Motorsports (UWFM) team has been using the same aerodynamic package design for the past 4 years.
To improve the grip and performance of the race car, our team has developed a brand new aerodynamic package including component designs (front wing, nose cone, and undertray), and new processes for simulation, manufacturing, and testing of the aerodynamic package. For the first time in recent history, UWFM will utilize an undertray, perform wind tunnel testing, and use single layup hollow wings.

Gait Controlled Knee Brace
18
A dynamic soft robotic knee brace which replaces modern static knee braces, specifically targeting patients with knee osteoarthritis. The brace operates using 2 balloons: one placed in a shoe and one at the knee. When the user takes a step, the balloon in their shoe deflates, inflating the balloon at the knee. The inflation of the knee balloon creates a 3-point bending moment, reducing the pain caused by knee osteoarthritis.

Herb Packaging Automation
20
In the past two years, the cost of farm labor has increased disproportionately to the price of produce paid by consumers. This creates an unsustainable decrease in profit for farmers and packaging facilities. To lower production costs, the processes of getting herbs from farm-to-table must be optimized. Our group plans on tackling this issue by automating a portion of the packaging process to reduce the labor cost and provide a healthy profit for continued operation.
