essage From the Chair
ear Alumni and Friends,
We have created this newsletter to reach out to alumni and friends of the
Chemical Engineering department, to provide you with an update on our
personnel, associations and organizations, and important activities.
The name for the newsletter was chosen from several that were proposed
during a friendly competition. I would like to acknowledge Matthew Blackie,
class of 2014, for proposing “The Distillate.”
As you may know, we have several groups of researchers within our ranks
covering research in polymers, biochemical engineering, process system
engineering, reaction engineering, energy and electrochemical devices
engineering, nanotechnology, etc. Within this newsletter, we provide current
information on our many faculty, staff, and student groups to let you know
who is still here and what their current endeavours are.
We also showcase our new Engineering 6 (E6) building, which we have
occupied for almost 3 years. It is a 5 story complex, with 115,000 square
feet of space, featuring 48 research labs, 93 offices for faculty and grad
students, 2 classrooms, 3 meeting rooms, and a new 4th year project lab
for Capstone Design Projects. This building is further equipped with a
glass-blowing shop, a mechanical workshop, and a computer workshop.
We recognize Dr. Jeno Scharer, who passed away in 2013. Although
retired, Jeno was still very active in research, and was very much appreci-
ated by his colleagues and students. This first edition of The Distillate is
dedicated to him and we have included an article to honour his memory.
We hope you will enjoy the first edition of The Distillate, and we encourage
you to send us your feedback at
. If you are in the
area, please feel free to visit us and tour the new facilities of E6.
Sincerely,
D
