Professor, Canada Research Chair
In 2013, Hector Budman continued his teaching and research
activities in the modeling, control and optimization of chemi-
cal processes, with a focus on biotechnological systems. He
is currently in collaboration with Sanofi Canada, monitoring
vaccine manufacturing processes that use fluorescence.
Hector will be chairing the Canadian Conference in Chemical
Engineering in October 2014. This is the first time that
Waterloo’s Chemical Engineering department will host the
event.
Ariel Chan is the newest addition to Chemical Engineering,
taking on the role of Lecturer. She received her BSc and
PhD in Chemical Engineering from Queen’s University, and
is continuing her postdoctoral work in engineering natural
polymer-based biomaterials for pharmaceutical applica-
tions. She is currently a member of the Design Champions
Committee for Waterloo Design Engineering, aiming to
facilitate the development and implementation of industry-
based case studies into the Chemical Engineering curricu-
lum..
Ioannis Chatzis has been with the department for over 31
years, conducting research in the flow properties of porous
media. His research has applications in the oil and gas
industry, pore structure characterization and modelling
capillary and transport phenomena in porous media.
Zhongwei Chen was early-tenured, and became an
Associate Professor in 2013. His research group develops
advanced energy material for fuel cells, metal-air batteries
and lithium ion batteries. Zhongwei acts as the Canada
Research Chair in Nano-Biomaterials.
Zhongwei also sits on the editorial board for the Scientific
Reports journal, and acts as a guest editor for Applied
Energy. In 2013, he was a keynote speaker at the World
Hydrogen Technologies Convention, and a panel speaker
at the Grid Resiliency Through Energy Storage in SW
Ontario conference.
