Professor, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies
Jason Grove has taken an interest in the use of case studies as a
teaching tool, participating in a training workshop on the prepara-
tion and use of “the case method”, writing and delivering an
environmentally focused case study, and delivering some other
case study material in class; he also presented on the use of
cases in engineering at the Canadian Engineering Education
Association conference in Montreal. Jason also made a number
of well-received screencasts—short teaching videos—to support
the programming aspects of the numerical methods course.
Jason is part of the organizing committee for the Canadian
Society for Chemical Engineering Conference being hosted by
the department in October 2014, focusing on planning the
student program for the conference.
Frank Gu has been awarded a Tier II Canada Research Chair
(CRC), and he is using this chair fund to advance research in
nanotechnology engineering. His CRC program aims to establish
an interdisciplinary research combining functional polymers and
ceramic materials to solve problems in medicine, agriculture and
environmental protection. In 2013, Frank has recruited three
highly talented graduate students to his lab, one of whom: Tim
Leshuk received the prestigious NSERC Vanier Doctoral Scholar-
ship. In terms of teaching, Frank taught three undergraduate
courses in the Nanotechnology Engineering program: 1) Introduc-
tion to Nanotechnology Engineering, 2) Introduction to Nanomedi-
cine and Biotechnology, and 3) Special topics in nanomedicine.
Ray Legge stepped down as the Associate Dean of Engineering
Graduate Studies and International Agreements in June and
assumed the position of Associate Dean of Graduate Studies in
July. Legge enjoyed his tenure as Associate Dean and looks
forward to working with colleagues across campus, meeting the
challenges and changing landscape associated with graduate
studies at UW. In 2013, Legge received one of the Outstanding
Performance Awards from the University of Waterloo. He has
numerous research collaborations with colleagues in both
academia and the private sector. He is a participant in several
provincially and federally funded projects that include MabNet and
an ORF project dealing with drinking water treatment. He has
also hosted a number of Mitac funded scholars which have
contributed significantly to advancing the research activities of his
group in the area of protein separation and characterization. Ray
is also a member of the Ontario Biomaterials A-Team.
Marios Ioannidis dedicated much of his time in 2013 to the
preparation of the ChE Department for accreditation by the
Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. As Associate Chair
- Curriculum & Accreditation, he leads the Department in the
implementation of undergraduate curriculum improvements
based on the assessment of student outcomes. As a member
of the Senate Long Range Planning Committee, he has been
involved with the implementation of the University’s strategic
goals in academic programming, a process he seeks to inform
with Chemical Engineering insights. Marios participated in the
10th International Conference on Nanosciences & Nanotech-
nologies, where he presented research on adsorption-driven
nanoparticle self-assembly that was subsequently published in
the journal Langmuir. In 2013, Marios was also extremely
pleased to witness the establishment at UW of the Student
Chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), a
student organization for which he serves as the faculty advisor.
