C. Perry Chou |
C. Perry Chou continues to perform research in developing
integrated strategies of microbial biotechnology, molecular
biology, metabolic engineering, and biochemical engineering
for manufacturing of value-added bioproducts, including
biofuels/solvents (e.g. ethanol, 1-propanol, 1-butanol),
hyaluronic acid, recombinant proteins (e.g. penicillin
acylases, lipases, therapeutic proteins, antibody fragments).
He is also involved in various editorial tasks, such as an
editor for Biotechnology Advances (an Elsevier journal with
2012 impact factor of 9.599) and a guest editor for Biore-
source Technology (an Elsevier journal with 2012 impact
factor of 4.750). In addition, he constantly provides profes-
sional services as a reviewer (for evaluation of journal
papers, grant proposals, and promotions) as well as a
biotechnological consultant.
Professor Eric Croiset participated in August 2013 in the 9th
World Congress of Chemical Engineering in Seoul, Korea, and
was invited by the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER),
Taejon, to make a presentation on the dynamic simulation of
CO2 capture processes. Eric has also been active, in collabora-
tion with the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy (WISE),
to promote the concept of Smart Energy Network (SEN). He
was the moderator of the session on SEN R,D&D roadmap at
the SEN Canada 2013 Leadership Event that took place in
September 2013 at the MARS Collaboration Centre in Toronto.
This high level event brought together about 75 leaders in
government, utilities, business, civil society and academia. Eric
also led and organized with WISE, and through NSERC
support, another SEN workshop, focusing on R&D, which took
place in Waterloo in late November 2013.
Peter Douglas has been the Director of the UW UAE campus in
Dubai since September 2009. After the decision, made in the
Fall 2012, to close the UAE campus Dr. Douglas has focused
his attention on winding down the campus, ensuring a smooth
transition for the 1st year students who had to move to the main
campus one year earlier than expected, arranging for co-op
positions and helping UW UAE staff secure new positions. In
September 2013, he continued in the UAE overseeing the
administrative process to close the campus as well asstarting
on a sabbatical at the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi. He has
been working on his research on PSE applications in the area
of carbon capture an storage and updating his grad course on
process optimisation using AspenPlus and GAMS.
Zhongwei Chen was early tenured and became Associate Professor
in 2013. His is involved with “Scientific report” as editorial board, and
“Applied Energy’s special issue” as guest editor. He was a Keynote
Speaker at the 2013 International Conference on the 5th World
Hydrogen Technologies Convention, and a Panel Speaker of
Alternative technology for grid resilience at the Grid Resiliency
through Energy Storage in SW Ontario Conference. His research
group of 4 post-doctoral fellows and 16 graduate students develops
advanced energy materials for fuel cells, metal-air batteries and
Li-ion batteries. His commitment to HQP training is demonstrated by
his group’s success. Dr. Siamak Farhad started as a tenure-track
Assistant Professor at the University of Akron in 2013. Mr. Drew
Higgins received the international 2011 Dr. Bernard Baker student
award for fuel cell research, the 2012 UWaterloo Dr. M. Chan-
drashekar Memorial Award in Sustainable Energy, and the 2013
Electrochemistry Society Canada section student award.
