Hector Budman |
Professor
In 2013 Hector Budman attended the joint international Dynam-
ics and Control of Process Systems and Computers Applications
in Biotechnology conferences in Bombay, organized by the
International Federation of Automatic Control. Hector will be
chairing the Canadian Conference in Chemical Engineering to
be held during October 2014. This is the first time in the history
of the conference that the Department will host the event. The
conference will offer an exciting program with interesting plenary
speakers and specialized symposia in different areas such as
catalysis, sustainable nano-materials, electro-chemical applica-
tions and biopharmaceuticals’ manufacturing. Budman contin-
ues his teaching and research activities in the areas of model-
ing, control and optimization of chemical processes, with
emphasis on biotechnological systems. He is currently collabo-
rating with Sanofi Canada, on the monitoring of vaccine manu-
facturing processes using fluorescence. Hector is currently
funded through different NSERC programs and MITACS.
Ariel Chan is the newest addition to the department in the rank
of Lecturer. She has received her B.Sc. and Ph.D. (2009) in
Chemical Engineering from Queen’s University and awarded
NSERC postdoctoral visiting scholarship (2009-2011) to
continue her research training in engineering natural polymer
based biomaterials for pharmaceutical applications. She is
currently appointed by the department to be the member in the
Design Champions Committee for Waterloo Design Engineer-
ing, aiming to facilitate the development and implement industry
based case studies into chemical engineering curriculum.

Professor Ioannis Chatzis has been with the Department for
over 31 years and conducts research of importance to flow
through porous media with applications to oil and gas industry,
pore structure characterization and modelling capillary and
transport phenomena in Porous media. In 2013 he co-authored
8 research publications. One of his recent PhD students, Dr.
Nima Rezaei, became Asssistant Professor in 2013 in Shiraz
University in Iran. He was the 10th in sequence of Prof.
Chatzis's student to join academia! Another one of his students,
Dr. Sohrab Zendehboudi, received an NSERC Postdoctolal
Fellowship and he is with MIT in the United States!
Pu Chen's research is at the interface of materials, biomedi-
cine and energy; it involves the application of materials
science, physical chemistry, surface thermodynamics,
biochemistry and molecular cell biology to energy, biomedical
and chemical engineering systems. His lab has produced over
150 high quality peer reviewed journal papers, with the
majority in the first rate biomaterials, chemistry and energy
journals, including Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. and JACS. His lab
also generated 86 Canadian and international patents/patent
applications, along with numerous conference and book
chapter publications. Their research has resulted in creation
of a start-up company on nano-peptide technology, which has
secured a seed fund. At the moment, another energy technol-
ogy developed in his lab is moving to a pilot plant, with a
substantial initial capital investment.
