Nasser M. Abukhdeir is a recent addition to the Chemical
Engineering department (May 2011). In 2013, he gave an invited
talk at the March Meeting of the American Physical Society
(Baltimore, Maryland, USA) and initiated two new industrial
research collaborations with Shell Canada and BlackBerry Ltd.
Additionally, he worked with Prof. Ricardez-Sandoval to deploy a
new high-performance computing system, hosted by SHARC-
NET, to enable their computational research in the areas of
multiscale simulation and computational fluid dynamics.
William Anderson developed new and continuing collaborations
with industry partners to advance technology in the areas of
hospital air emissions control, clinical water testing, residential air
UV disinfection, and agricultural resource recovery. He appreci-
ated the help of a variety of high school, undergraduate, Masters,
Doctoral and Post-doctoral researchers in his group. Much of
this work was took place during his six month sabbatical in the
latter half of the year. In the first half-year he continued as the
Faculty of Engineering’s Director of Admissions, managing the
hectic undergraduate admissions process that deals with
thousands of applicants to Chemical Engineering and the other
12 programs
Marc Aucoin was awarded tenure, promoted to Associate
Professor, and named Academic Director for the WatPD
Engineering program in 2013. Marc continued his involve-
ment with the chemical engineering bioprocessing courses
and a cross-disciplinary course on synthetic biology. He also
continued serving as a faculty mentor to the UW International
Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) and UW Designed
Nanoscale Assembly (uwDNA) teams. His research group
continues to work on virus-based systems, the production of
complex biologics, and the utilization of NMR-based metabolo-
mic analysis for assessing bioprocesses. Marc has built strong
collaborative relationships with Chenomx, Sanofi Pasteur,
Trojan Technologies, and Innovascreen. This past year one of
Marc's post-doctoral fellows departed to join Novartis Inc.
Marc is funded by a number of different Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council programs.
