Rules and Specifications for the Toboggans

3.1 Construction

3.1.1

The participants of the registered team must build the toboggan. Each member of the team must be a student, except in the case of noncompeting and graduate teams.

3.1.2

Those toboggans having already taken part in the competition, in a previous year, are not forbidden to do so again, but will not be eligible for one of the three place finishes. They will thus be registered in the non-competing category.

3.1.3

Each toboggan (including all accessories required for the race) cannot have a weight of more than 136.4 kg or 300 lbs.

3.1.4

Each toboggan must be able to accommodate 5 participants.

3.1.5

The running surface of each toboggan must be made of Portland Cement based concrete only.

3.1.6

Only wax is permitted to facilitate a smoother running surface. Utilization of varnish, paint, epoxy, Teflon or similar products is forbidden.

3.1.7

Utilization of reinforcements and admixtures is not only admissible, but encouraged.

3.1.8

Each toboggan must be equipped with a braking system which is to be constructed to allow for stopping in as short a distance as possible.

3.1.9

No toboggan can be designed in a way whereby pieces are lost or come unfastened during the descent or braking process.

3.1.10

Each team should provide a method to attach a cable to the toboggan to facilitate the ascent up the hill. It is highly recommended to install a 50 mm diameter ring to the front of the toboggan (no ring, no tow up the hill).

3.2 Security and Safety

3.2.1

Each toboggan must be equipped with a roll bar to prevent participants from becoming injured in case of an overturn.

3.2.2

No sharp or protruding parts are permitted in the interior or exterior of the toboggan.

3.2.3

The participants can not be attached to the toboggan, nor can they be attached to each other.

3.2.4

No toboggan can be enclosed. Each participant must be able to exit freely at all times.

3.2.5

If the Organizing Committee deems a toboggan to be in any way unsafe, it will be barred from performing its runs.

3.3 Toboggan Transport and Storage

3.3.1

Each team is responsible at all times for its toboggans and all of its equipment and belongings. It is up to the team to make appropriate arrangements to avoid damage of the toboggan during its transport. The Organizing Committee is not responsible for any damages incurred to the toboggans, equipment, or belongings of any team or its members incurred during transport.

3.3.2

Each team must claim its toboggan before the deadline (after the races). After this time, toboggans become the property of University of Waterloo and will be disposed of.

3.3.3

Each team will uncrate their toboggan for the exhibition and the race. Teams must re-crate their toboggan and load it for transport after the exhibition. Teams are strongly encouraged to construct toboggans and crates for minimal assembly and disassembly.
