This project showcases the design of a rural, 5-person family home located in Louga, Senegal. This area of the world is undergoing rapid desertification because of climate change. In response to this, the objective of our project is to use the readily available, local materials and simple construction techniques to design a home that makes the increasingly harsh climate comfortable for occupants while they work on revitalizing this important land.

Adaptive Reuse Group

Adaptive reuse is a building design and construction approach that repurposes existing structures for a new use, rather than demolishing and constructing a new building. This project is focused on the adaptive reuse of Victoria Public School in Woodstock, ON. The objective is to convert the school into self-assisted apartments for senior citizens, offering a comfortable housing option while reducing the environmental impact of new construction. The design takes into consideration the unique requirements and needs of the aging population to ensure a functional and comfortable living environment.

The Charles Street Bus Terminal in downtown Kitchener, Ontario was recently decommissioned and the Region of Waterloo is looking for a new use for the vacant site. GreenStem Group is proposing that two multi-use podium towers containing affordable, market, and accessible housing as well as public amenities for the surrounding community be built on this site. GreenStem Group is guided by principles of economy and sustainability to produce a high-performance design of the structural, service and enclosure systems.

The University of Waterloo’s Plant Operations department has presented the desire to increase the amount student residential units within the next 10 to 15 years to accommodate the influx of students. To address this problem, Bespoke Consulting has proposed the demolition and reconstruction of the University of Waterloo Place (UWP). To guide the design choices for the proposed building, the following objectives have been set: increase energy reduction, increase student satisfaction, increase the population density, and ultimately achieve carbon neutrality.
