Northstruct

As climate change continues to increase the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, communities in Western Canada are experiencing challenges accommodating post-disaster shelter and non-potable water needs. Northstruct is proposing a sustainable solution for the community of Fort Chipewyan centered around a rapidly deployable approach requiring minimal resources. This permanent design aims to combine modular construction with a rainwater harvesting and treatment system to achieve this goal.

In northern Canadian communities, many lower income groups do not have access to affordable housing. The lack of labour in the region makes it difficult for construction to take place there. ModulHouse seeks to mitigate this issue by separating a home into modular compartments. These various compartments that comprise of open concept rooms can be easily transported and connected on site. This building science solution significantly decreases the price of building a new home and the cost to ship materials.

Modulacity

In 2010, Haiti was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake which killed hundreds of thousands, displaced millions, and obliterated housing and infrastructure. Its lingering effects are still felt to this day.
The continuous barrage of natural disasters is a fundamental issue crippling Haiti’s development and there exists an urgent need for an economically, environmentally, and time efficient solution. Modulacity proposes the use of foldable modular buildings inspired by origami to be used as portable post-disaster shelters in Haiti and similar at-risk locations.

With Canada’s population continuing to grow, so too should its public transportation. Currently there is a lack of effective inter-city transport between two of the largest Canadian cities, Toronto, and Montreal. This is why a Canadian government agency has set out a bid to solve this issue. Choo Choo Consulting will be providing a high-speed rail solution that aims to be faster, more economical, and more sustainable than existing methods of transport along this corridor.

Timber Consulting Ltd. has been retained by the University of Waterloo to design the lateral load resisting system for a proposed 13 storey student residence building. The design will involve new and innovative technology that will allow the majority of the building to be constructed using Cross-Laminated Timber as a primary material. Timber Consulting will design the lateral system consisting of CLT panels that are capable of resisting the necessary loads.
